Esmeralda - love or hate? And a middle name?

Current top choice for DD2 - nickname Essy rather than Esme which is getting a bit common and can sound horrid yelled out: "EZZZZ MAIIII".

She could be Mel when older I guess. We also need a traditional English middle name to go with it - current favourites are Rose or Paige. Ideally 1 syllable.

Don't like sorry, like Rose though as the middle name.

Esmeralda Louise
Esmerelda Kate
Esmerelda Nancy

I like Esmeralda Kate.

Be aware OP that when your DD goes to school she may very well end up with Esme as her nickname Smile

I rather like it. She could be nn Merry, Zelda, lots of possibilities for teenage name changing:)

Esmerelda Rose is pretty.

Will she grow up to give out water and a little pity? Sorry, just can't get over that.

I think of an old ugly witch when I hear that name - I have no idea why

grobagsforever · 03/05/2014 16:36

handrags - because of Granny Weatherwax from Terry Pratchett maybe? Yeah I know others may pick up on Esme...

Onesleep - Fair point, at least the character was basically good, strong and independent.

Beloved of Quasimodo?

Cruel mummy.

But Quadimodo wasn't evil, just ugly!

I have to be honest and say I don't like it, sorry. Sounds like a Disney film character.

I love it x

Blimey, that is awful.

I only don't love it because my grandmother was an Esme, and a cruel woman. However if I wipe the association, I actually don't mind the name for a new generation.
If you were to use it, it would look nice with;
Esmerelda June (depending on due date I guess)
Esmerelda Joy
Esmerelda Grace
Esmerelda Faye
Esmerelda Beau
Esmerelda Beth
Esmerelda Dale
Esmerelda Jade
Esmerelda Maeve
Esmerelda Rue

I thought this was a joke, sorry.

All I hear is Quasimodo in the tower howling "Esmeralda!"

I'm clearly off the mark tonight though because on another thread about Ivy I have had to stop myself typing IV-drip.

Don't do it anyway, it's awful, truly.

I have known a little Esmerelda, it's very pretty and definitely unusual!

Esmerelda Violet

Esmerelda Belle

Esmerelda Celine

Hmmm toffeemum you're giving me second thoughts now. But the majority of people, and certainly DDs generation won't know the hunchback of notre damm...seems to be a very marmite name judging by responses on here.

Really don't like it I'm afraid - for me it conjures up pictures of the Ugly sisters in Cinderella / Pantomime Dame type person. Sorry!

Imedla-brings up imagines of that politician's wife who had tons of shoes! Emerald is cute, not sure what we'd shorten it too- Em?

Emerald could be shortened to Em or Emmie or Emma, or Merry (as suggested above)

Grobagsforever did you go for Esmeralda in the end? What has been your experience? We are considering it as it's unusual in the UK and DH is Spanish but we noticed that many people hate it as it's kind of a marmite name. Not sure if you will even get to see the message as it's been a few years since this post
