Esmeralda - love or hate? And a middle name?

Current top choice for DD2 - nickname Essy rather than Esme which is getting a bit common and can sound horrid yelled out: "EZZZZ MAIIII".

She could be Mel when older I guess. We also need a traditional English middle name to go with it - current favourites are Rose or Paige. Ideally 1 syllable.

Don't like sorry, like Rose though as the middle name.

Esmeralda Louise
Esmerelda Kate
Esmerelda Nancy

I like Esmeralda Kate.

Be aware OP that when your DD goes to school she may very well end up with Esme as her nickname smile

Darmok Sat 03-May-14 16:00:08

I rather like it. She could be nn Merry, Zelda, lots of possibilities for teenage name changingsmile

Esmerelda Rose is pretty.

Will she grow up to give out water and a little pity? Sorry, just can't get over that.

I think of an old ugly witch when I hear that name - I have no idea why

grobagsforever Sat 03-May-14 16:36:29

handrags - because of Granny Weatherwax from Terry Pratchett maybe? Yeah I know others may pick up on Esme...

Onesleep - Fair point, at least the character was basically good, strong and independent.

Onesleeptillwembley Sat 03-May-14 16:47:46

Yep, she was. smile

Beloved of Quasimodo?

Cruel mummy.

grobagsforever Sat 03-May-14 18:00:09

But Quadimodo wasn't evil, just ugly!

funnyoldonion Sat 03-May-14 19:25:49

Love it!

KitKat1985 Sat 03-May-14 20:13:51

I have to be honest and say I don't like it, sorry. Sounds like a Disney film character.

Cezella Sat 03-May-14 23:22:10

I love it x

gertiegusset Sat 03-May-14 23:25:52

Blimey, that is awful.

Graciejoylove8 Sun 04-May-14 00:41:39

I only don't love it because my grandmother was an Esme, and a cruel woman. However if I wipe the association, I actually don't mind the name for a new generation.
If you were to use it, it would look nice with;
Esmerelda June (depending on due date I guess)
Esmerelda Joy
Esmerelda Grace
Esmerelda Faye
Esmerelda Beau
Esmerelda Beth
Esmerelda Dale
Esmerelda Jade
Esmerelda Maeve
Esmerelda Rue

I thought this was a joke, sorry.

All I hear is Quasimodo in the tower howling "Esmeralda!"

I'm clearly off the mark tonight though because on another thread about Ivy I have had to stop myself typing IV-drip.

Don't do it anyway, it's awful, truly.

Sundaedelight Sun 04-May-14 09:05:34

I have known a little Esmerelda, it's very pretty and definitely unusual!

Esmerelda Violet

Esmerelda Belle

Esmerelda Celine

Tiredemma Sun 04-May-14 09:07:27

I Love it and always have- but just wasnt brave enough to use it so 'just' have an Esme instead.

Gemerama Sun 04-May-14 09:15:14

I think Esme is a nice name, but really don't like Esmerelda at all sorry

grobagsforever Sun 04-May-14 12:59:56

Hmmm toffeemum you're giving me second thoughts now. But the majority of people, and certainly DDs generation won't know the hunchback of notre damm...seems to be a very marmite name judging by responses on here.

BackforGood Sun 04-May-14 13:08:27

Really don't like it I'm afraid - for me it conjures up pictures of the Ugly sisters in Cinderella / Pantomime Dame type person. Sorry!

ViviPru Sun 04-May-14 16:19:36

What about Imelda?

florascotia Sun 04-May-14 19:12:42

Since Esmeralda means Emerald, what about Emerald?

grobagsforever Mon 05-May-14 09:00:03

Imedla-brings up imagines of that politician's wife who had tons of shoes! Emerald is cute, not sure what we'd shorten it too- Em?

florascotia Mon 05-May-14 09:34:49

Emerald could be shortened to Em or Emmie or Emma, or Merry (as suggested above)
