Is Leo ever shortened to Lee?

Hi there. We're considering naming DS Leo, but DH is concerned people will shorten it to Lee. Does anyone called / with family member called Leo know if this is likely to happen at all?

Thanks!

That's what I thought too, but need some hard evidence from fellow Leos to convince DH! Wink

It wouldn't occur to me to shorten it to Leo.

My friend is called Leo and I've never called him lee. Never heard anyone else call him lee either.

IME, names get shortened where there is a handy consonant sound to stop at (if that makes sense). Names where the syllables are separated by a vowel sound don't seem to get shortened.

The Leo I know doesn't get shortened to Lee either. Men worry about some daft things when it comes to baby names!

I suppose other kids might shorten Lee-o to Lee, but does it really matter that much? What would be 'wrong' with the nickname Lee? I quite like it.

Never would think of shortening Leo to Lee.
We're thinking of Leon for our DC if it's a boy and I would never think of that being shortened to Lee either.

My Leo never gets shortened to Lee, but I do sometimes call him Leo-Lou! Smile He's 6 now so I expect he will ask me to stop that soon... Totally biased but it's a great name!

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful. Hopefully enough to convince DH! I'm liking Leo more and more! x

Definitely not. Leo is a lovely name.

My Leo is never shortened. As a baby I nick-named him Leo-Beo which is obviously longer!

Hope your DH goes for it. I love the name (obv) but also receive lots of compliments on it.

Sorry to be a fly in the ointment but the only Leo I know does get shortened to Lee - by his mum and family though! My son's his best friend and never calls him that. What's wrong with Lee anyway?

Husband called Leo - never heard anyone call him lee and would be horrified if they did! Much prefer Leo...great name and any place you travel seem to be able to understand name - maybe because of the star signs?!
