What do you think of Emyr?

What do you think of Emyr as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

We also like Ivan/ Ifan, Idris, Henning and Nye (as in Anuerin - but I think that might be weird!), Oisin and good old Joseph.

I should add, yes I am part Welsh! (I'm equal parts Irish, Welsh, Scottish and English)

I think he would get sick of telling people how to pronounce and spell his name (I have an unusual name and it is v annoying!).

I'd go with something a non welsh speaker could say like Ivan, Nye or Joseph.

I love it, but wouldn't give it to anyone not living in Wales. Do you know the proper Welsh pronounciation?

I thought it was a misspelling of the Irish girls name Emer! Or Eimear as I think it's also spelled.

My first thought on seeing the thread title was that it was a unique spelling of Emir (as in Emirates), which would be a bit like naming your child "king" or "president" Confused

Until I read your post I had no idea it was a real name in Wales, so I would assume many other people's reaction may be similar...

Thanks all - yes I discussed with DH and he though the same as you vitaminC
Erotic I think it's Em-eer. But I'm just going on baby name finders for that, it would be embarrassing to find I would be saying it all wrong!
Meringue I link Emrys too, but DH also wasn't sure...

I'm now thinking something more straightforward would be good as we have an easily misspelled surname....

The stress is on the first syllable. EM-eer (like Emma).
Emlyn?

Nye as in Aneurin confuses me- Aneurin is said A-neigh-rin not A-nye-rin when pronounced the proper welsh way! That said, I quite like Nye!

I know several Emyrs so I say go for it, It's not an overly complicated pronunciation or anything- the stress is on the Em like in Emma- Em-ir

We have a Nye but used the old welsh spelling Aneirin on the birth certificate as it seems to be easier for non welsh speakers to say/spell than Aneurin

It's pronounced Em-ir. I like it, but know loads, being Welsh. Also like Ifan, but not keen on the others.
Fav Welsh boys' names are Ieuan, Rhodri, Gareth, Tomas and Iolo.
Do you like any of those?

Also love the Irish names Jarlath.

What about Gethin, Ianto, Elis, Iago?
