Beginning to ponder...

...names again! Very early days with DC2, feels slightly tempting fate to talk about it, but no-one in real life outside immediate family knows I'm pregnant, so this is a bit of self-indulgence.

Anyway, DH and I seem to have already used the only girl's name we both like with DD1 and are feeling deeply uninspired. I love: most virtue names but we've already used one; as well as Marianne (Leonard Cohen AND Jane Austen!!) and Rosanna (good friend's name, and I've always thought it was gorgeous) which have both been vetoed by DH for being two names spliced together. He's potentially persuadable on Susannah which I've recently become slightly fixated on, but he doesn't love it.

I also love Blythe, which is never going to happen, and quite like Tabitha, which might...

The runner up choice last time was Martha, which we both still love, but close friends have since used it which I think might rule it out. We both also love Eva, but everyone I know has a niece called Eva so I don't really want to use it.

Looking for traditional, British or biblical (ie not names strongly identified with cultures we don't have a connection to); not too frilly; ideally not too overused, though we ended up ignoring that with DD1 because we loved her name so much. Sorry, have rambled on for ever - any thoughts?!

Blythe Harriet's absolutely gorgeous, but sadly I don't think I'm going to get anywhere on that one with DH.

Thanks for the list Blue - in fact for reasons which would out me it's just occurred to me that Miranda would be the perfect middle name, so thank you so much! Don't think I like it enough to use it as a first name, but it may have to be in the mix...

Susannah is lovely (classic, and for nicknames you have the choice of Susie or Sukey). Marianne is gorgeous too, and Rosanna very nice. What's wrong with 'two names spliced together' as long as you're not using the dreaded hyphen? Both these names have been in use for centuries anyway.

Blythe I don't like at all, as I don't really get the whole 'surnames as first names' thing, especially for girls. To me, they are not proper names.

Nadia, I know they've been proper names for ever but DH has a weird thing about them. Susannah doesn't fall into the same category because it's biblical! I do love it - may keep working on that one.

Funny about Blythe - if I thought of it as being derived from the surname, which I guess it must be, I wouldn't like it at all either! But I've always just thought of it as meaning blithe, which I love. And the Anne of Green Gables link helps...! Non-starter though,DH thinks it's awful.

Biblical names I like are Esther, Naomi and Rachel. Ruth is lovely too as is Susannah. Rosamund is good, so is Rosalind. A good friend of mine is called Roslind, which is unusual. Other ideas - Madeleine, Eleanor, Julia, Esme, Lindsey, Kitty and Helena.

Ooh yes, I wondered about Madeleine, lovely name - though I'm not very keen on Maddie.

Rosamund/Rosalind etc I just find a bit OTT for some reason; which is a shame because I love Rosie but would want it to be short for something... and Rosanna's already been vetoed! I suggested Rosa but DH said it makes him think of Rosa Klebb (Bond villain!).

Hmm. Ages to go, and it may well be a boy! But any ideas very gratefully received!
