Anybody know when they are going to publish the data on baby names for 2012? I remember they'd published it by this time last year.

Thank you pygmy. I can't cope without knowing how many Renesmes and Feenixs were born last year.

I was just logging on to post the same question. I'm due in September and was hoping for a peek at the runners and riders before then!

So is this list coming out tomorrow then? Strangely excited...

Ha ha I'm excited too. So sad. I've already checked the news and ONS websites that's how keen I am.

SKY has just trailed that it has a piece coming up shortly on the new Top 10s.

(But the utter arses seem to have missed that these are the 2011 lists - the "Royal baby name" is totally irrelevant so why do you have the presenter banging on about it?)

Wow - Amelia was a rather emphatic "winner" at #1 for the girls this year. In 2011, it was #1, but was only used 116 times more than the name at #2 (Olivia).

In 2012, it was used 2,476 times more than Olivia at #2.

Thanks for the link - off to browse

(and see if SKY were right that the biggest climbers were Ivy and Hugo)

Surprised to see Charlotte at 21. I didn't think it was that popular.

Pleased to see Theo being used as a name in its own right. Dh is convinced we should use Theodore but now I can show him this Grin

DS's name has gone from the mid 400s to just outside the top 400. So gaining in popularity but we still won't come across too many hopefully.

Lots of hyphenated names in there. Three babies called Marvellous.

the dds names still where they normally are (top 50, not top 10) which is how I like it!

The BBC reports that "six new names entered the top 100 for girls" and one of these is Mollie. Confused

I have to say that the whole business of spelling variations makes a lot of these statistics somewhat misleading. I don't think you can make a convincing case for Mollie being a different name from Molly, which has been very popular for a while.

I think the "true" top name for girls is Sophie/Sophia/Sofia - if you add them together, they are a few hundred more than Amelia (I rounded as was adding in head)

Boys's too name is Harry, but Mohammed and variants is the true second place.

Report
FromageFrog · 12/08/2013 11:11

Yes it would be good to see a list where they placed the variants together to give a true picture.

There are 15 tiny Norberts.

How do I find the huge list apple? - Rather than just the top ten and 100?

Report
meditrina · 12/08/2013 11:18

Full list?

Use elephants link. Click the link to the full data section. It'll take you to two spreadsheets (one for each sex), and those spreadsheets have several tabs - full list is the 8th one across.

And another complication is the hyphen or no hyphen, which results in the likes of Lily-May and Lilymay (and presumably Lily May) being counted separately.

I think the boys list is less prone to this sort of thing, but it's still a factor.

Mine is one of the new boy's entries. Ds 1 around the 300s as usual.

Morning. If you're wondering what the most popular names of 2012 actually were (the list has been published today), you can find it here.
