My top names for girls at the moment are:

  1. Ramona
  2. Hazel
  3. Katherine (nn Kitty)
  4. Treasa (Irish, 'e' is silent, pronounced Tra-sa)

Which do you like/dislike and why?

Thanks!

DC3 would have been Catherine/Kitty if he hadn't waggled his undercarriage at the sonographer Grin so that gets my vote.

Using an Irish name you have to explain is only easy in the right community IMHO. Are you in Ireland? Are your child's friends (or their parents) likely to be familiar with it?

Cheers Horry!

Yes, we're Irish, living in Ireland and have an Irish surname!

My niece is called Ramona, I think it's the most stunning name ever. You don't hear it often either and I love unusual and unique names.

I'm Irish myself, but wouldn't call my daughter Treasa. I'm expecting twin boys and finding it extremely hard choosing unusual Irish names. But I'll be saving Aoife for when I have a little girl.

Ramona gets my vote.

I love Hazel.

I love Katharine. It would have been my DS' second name if he had been a she!!

I don't like 1 or 4, sorry!

Thanks, Ramona is top of our list at the moment! Although I've always loved Hazel, ever since I was a teenager. Lady Hazel Lavery was the woman pictured on all the Irish money before the introduction of the euro. There are beautiful portraits of her in Dublin's national gallery. Lulu, Irish names are so popular in Ireland at the moment! I'm a teacher and there are so many Aoifes in the schools. It is a gorgeous name though. My concern about Treasa is that the pronunciation would cause confusion outside of Ireland.

In order of preference

  1. Katherine (nn Kitty) - I really like , timeless lots of nn if dd doesn't like kitty or something
  2. Hazel - I like it
  3. Ramona - meh
  4. Treasa (Irish, 'e' is silent, pronounced Tra-sa) - sorry not a fan purely because I wouldn't know how to pronounce/ spell it

No problem Touchmybum, I want opinions!

DH's surname is quite commonplace here, so I want a girls name that is a bit unusual. So many little girls in Ireland now called Ava, Eve, Ella, Bella, Isabella, Sophia, Lucy, Lily, Emily.........

I do actually like Hazel. Ramona is just number 1 for me. Ahh I know. Sure all my family are in Dublin and I live in London, they're forever saying the amount of Aoife's and Caoimhe's is ridiculous. I don't know anyone over here called Aoife...yet.

I like Renée also

I knew sisters called Aoife and Caoimhe. I thought that was a bit much.

Hazel is nice too. Ramona puts me in mind of the Ramones (but I'm old!!) or butter (Dromona!)
Lots of lovely nn for Katherine!

Yes, Caoimhe is very, very popular too. Probably the worst Irish name being saddled on kids these days is Caoimhfhloinn. Pronounced Keelin. Imagine saddling that on a child. And Eabha. Pronounced Ava. Definitely a made-up attempt at being 'different.'

Ah definitely. Shame on them. I couldn't do it, although I did like Keelan for a boy. But according to my partner our boys are being called Tommy and Padraig, I'm shaming, my poor boys. I love Alba for a girl.

Thanks for all your replies. Didn't expect Katherine to be so popular tbh!

Ramona is a superb name- love it.
Hazel is nice.
Katherine is lovely, but kitty is my cat.
Don't like the sound of treasa.

Thanks, people seem to either love or hate Ramona! Still love it and it sounds fab with our surname.
I happen to think the Ramones were cool btw! And I love the Bob Dylan song 'to ramona.' The link to butter was pretty much lost on me though.

I think my order goes:
Ramona
Hazel
Katherine
Traesa

I am torn between Ramona and Hazel as live them both! Really dislike Traesa though.

Ramona is quite pretty, although the "moaner" sound might put me off a bit. I like Rowena as an alternative.
Not keen on Hazel but not sure why!
Katherine is lovely and classic but I don't like Kitty (too catty)
Treasa - haven't heard of it but it sounds quite nice.

(Irish, 'e' is silent, pronounced Tra-sa)

Still not sure how you'd pronounce Traesa - is it more like Tray-suh or Trah-suh? Would it be misheard as Tracey?

Elquota, Treasa rhymes with NASA!
