I think I've won wtf?! baby name top trumps!

So a few weeks ago I was in a post natal ward cuddling my brand new DS. The lady in the bay opposite me had just given birth to twins - one boy one girl.

The boy's name was Orion, the girl's name was Indiana.

Their surname - Jones.

They have called their daughter Indiana Jones.

Funnily enough, I overheard one conversation with a nurse who asked the twins' names. The mum said "Indiana Jo..." then stopped and the nurse laughed and said "oh you were about to say Indiana Jones weren't you?!". The mum replied, completely seriously, something like "yes but I'm not sure if they would be under my maiden name as I first registered under my maiden name". Cue about a minute of stunned silence from the nurse followed by awkward mumblings about names.

However at that point I still thought maybe I'd got it wrong until I heard the mum telling visitors how another nurse, when she told her what her DD's name was, had started going on about people she knew with celebrity names and the mum said to her visitors she didn't get what that had to do with her DD's name. It almost seemed like it hadn't occurred to her, yet both parents were English and I would guess early thirties so there could be absolutely no way they hadn't heard of Indiana Jones!

WHY?! Why would you do that?! The worst thing is they are making another Indiana Jones film so it's pretty much guaranteed she's going to go to school with children who know the films!

surely you must be wrong. When I had DC the hospital used my surname even though I said their surname would be different (DH). They said they had to use the mother's surname.



I think Jones is a great surname in general though!

bassington that may be why she corrected herself the first time but no, we were both in for a few days and as much as I wanted to be wrong it was pretty clear by the time I left. I'm not sure what the deal was with her surname but a couple of times her and her DH/DP were on the phone and started out by saying "it's the Jones family."

I've got two great baby names I heard from the same family! The parents are big rock music fans so all their children's first names come from famous musicians.

Oscar (yes, the Grouch)

and the youngest, a baby girl called Euphegenia (sp?) - but Effie for short. It suits them all perfectly. There's also a cousin Izzy - and when she and her big cousin Floyd are together, the family call them Fizzy!

I was at school the other day and I'm sure that I heard someone call their children and one of the little (ie too young to be at school) was called something like Vajazzli.

Unfortunately nobody else around to say what was that? It was a bit indistinct and there is a fairly broad multi cultural mix of names so there are always a handful if names that I've never heard before and occasionally I need to hear it a couple of times to get it exactly right but it's the first time that a name (that may or may not be, but is close enough to be confused with!) has left me

If I had definitely heard it distinctly I would have started a thread on here. But as it is I'll just say it here.

And yes - bonkers name for a child, doesn't give them a chance to lay claim to their own name, it's always going to have a shadow hanging over the name.

Well it could have been Nigel. My dads friend wanted his son to have an English name (he is asian) so he called him Nigel. The boy must be about 18 now, of all the names he could have been called Nigel is horrifific. Also his parents pronouned the name as Ni-gel.

We had friends who initially named their DS Ewan Kerr. When it was pointed out to them that in an Irish accent it was "you wanker" his name was changed swiftly!

Woman on the ward I was in when I had DD was booked for a C-Sec. She had a daughter and twin boys already. Can't remember what they were called but she was naming the girl after her mother. I heard her telling the midwife this.
Midwife asked her how the name was spelled. Woman said "P-E-R-S... oh, I'm not sure."

The name was Priscilla.
It was HER MOTHER's name. Her mother visited every day. And she couldn't spell her name.

Try going to do an ECG on 'Baby Begum' - that's all that is on the request.

But this is 20 years ago (things are changing / have changed), you are working in a town with significant Pakistani immigrant population and 'Begum' is the equivalent of 'Mrs'.

There must have been 20 baby Begums.
