'Noun' Names

We really love Scout for a girl but it doesn't fit the surname at all. I like the idea of a noun as a name but I'm drawing a blank - bar flower names which I'm not keen on. Any thoughts? We also liked Sailor but I we have changed our minds about that too!

I love Scout - have two friends with daughters called Scout (both in Sydney). Both were fans of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Not sure about Sailor... It's not a noun but I also love Brett for a girl...

Nature names - Rain, Rainbow, River, Skye?
All the 'virtue' names - Patience, Hope, Mercy etc.
Stone names - Opal, Ruby, Beryl, Diamond etc
Months - April, May, June, also January or Octavia
Musical names - Melody, Harmony, Cadence, Aria

I've heard of girls named Hunter. I think Myleene Klass named her daughter Hero.

Ooh, some of these are great, thanks all. Opal is actually on our list, but again I'm not sure if it fits with the surname (which is Childs).

No problem! I love a lot of these myself.

Wow Lentil - what a fab list!! There are some absolute corkers there! I esp like Epiphany (nn Pippi?), Archer, Aster, Emerald, Clover and Willow. How about Cora (nn Corky)? I think you have to be careful that, with a surname Childs, she doesn't sound too hippyish. When she is a high court judge/brain surgeon/vet, it needs to fit!!

DS (20) has friends called Evie, Eden, Jade, Summer, Skye so they have been quite popular for sometime. But the best of all is Fathom - now that IS unusual (or was there a Gladiator with that name?). Anyway I rather like it.

Pixieonthemoor - totally agree about the hippyish thing. It's a bit of a tricky one!

Really value the suggestions here. I feel like I've read every name in the universe at the moment...

Thanks, Pixie I really like noun for name names too. :)
I love Amity (but will never use as my name begins with A), Cadence and Calypso (oops, doesn't put this one on the above list. Won't use as DH's name starts with C), Ember (have a friend with one of these!), Echo, Fable, Honor, Jewel, Phoenix, Reverie, Scout and Sailor. I haven't got a DD but if I do, she's getting a word name. DS has a word name, I absolutely love that it is Scrabble-acceptable! Grin

OP, Scout and Sailor are both really utterly fabulous, IMHO, and your surname is fine with a slightly hippy first name. I would love to know what you go for in the end, if you feel like sharing, please update! :)

Lentil - I certainly will! We've got another 5 weeks before the baby's due but I'll endeavour to post then.

Scout would be fine with your surname. Better i think than a name like Summer I.e. "a summer child". Go for Scout!

Thanks Lentil. It seems to have gone faster this time but these last few weeks aren't half dragging on. Ready to have a baby now!

Lentil they arent even lentil-weavery. Totally bog standard first name, just called the bump Lentil (as it looked in the first scan), and it stuck. Say the name was Annie, LO is known to everyone as Annie Lentil Grin

What about

Tent
Woggle
Bobajob

Scout is a name for a dog or a pony. Poor little girls whose stupid parents call them such an ugly inappropriate name.Angry It was just a nickname in TKAM, the girl's name was Jean Louise.

That is rude and uncalled for you miserable sow.
Way to bring a thread down.
I've got an 'unreal name' and my parents are neither stupid or uneducated. You clearly have been brought up to be ill mannered and mean.

Scout is a brill name and I love it.
