There were 4 Fionas in my primary school year. Catherine, Grainne and Roisin were also prevalent.

Boys wise : Michael, Ciaran and Luke are the ones I know the most of. I'm in my late 30s and in NI.

I'm early 40s and these were the most common names at my school:
Rachel
Sarah
Catherine/Kate
Nicola
Louise/a
Joanne/a

I went to an all girls school so not so sure about boys but I think I remember the following as being pretty common at the time:
Stephen
Matthew
Robert
Martin
Nicholas
Mark
Christopher
David

None of my family have any of the above names though, male or female, and I'm one of five so I'm quite pleased that my parents were a bit more imaginative ( although I was going to be called Matthew if I'd been a boy).

I actually went to school with some very unusual, one-off names, that I've never heard of before and since. Odd, since I grew up in a deeply middle class area. As well as lots of lovely under-used names, including two of the swans from Swan Lake.

Everyone always says there's far more diversity in names now, but I'm inclined to strongly disagree. There actually seems to be a relatively small pool of names that get used over and over these days. Olivia, Florence, Beatrice, Ruby, Daisy, Sophie, Grace, Millie et al, Isabella et al, Isla, Evie, Eva, Ava, etc, are all well and truly done.

The eyes-glaze-over names from my generation are probably Karen, Joanne, Angela, Andrea, Jennifer, Sarah, Claire, Lisa, Nicole/a, Jane, Bridget. All lovely names. But very, very, very familiar. Not as good with boys' names as I went to an all-girls' school. But Simon, Mark, Matthew, Andrew, Richard, etc, were all pretty standard.

Late 30s from Northern Ireland:

Deborah
Naomi
Judith
Ruth
Claire

And oddly enough, at one point in primary school, 3 girls out of the 15 or so in my class were called Barbara!

I am early thirties in Kent and I have to say, I have great trouble with all the Chrises. Seriously, I know at least 7 of them and have to differentiate with their surname to other friends and family. Sarah's the post popular girls name amongst my friends too.

School: Claire or Sarah for girls; David, James and Mark (or more usually, Marc) for boys

University: definitely Kate for girls; James, Ben or Ed for boys.
