if you like eye-than though, why not just use ethan?

Because every one I know pronounces Ethan Ee-than, not eye-than?

I would think Ay-Than.

Thanks so much ladies, you have confirmed my fears that I had let DH talk me into a pronunciation that's not obvious (eye-than). The longer you live with something yourself the harder it can be to see it as others would, so your comments have really helped, back to the drawing board me thinks...

ladymia - oh yes, like Anthony which can be pronounced with a hard 'T' or a soft 'Th'.

OP can you let us know now we've been guessing for a while which way you prefer please? smile

I'd pronounce it to rhyme with Nathan but would look quizzically and wonder if it was eye- thun

CarlingBlackMabel Wed 06-Feb-13 19:05:07

To rhyme with Nathan.

But it sounds like a mis-pronounced Aiden.

I would think either ay-than or eye-than.

^ I would say Aye-than- I think anybody would.^

Anybody apart from all the people who said Athan to rhyme with Nathan. grin

zipzap Wed 06-Feb-13 17:23:18

With an Ee sound at the front in Ireland or an Ay sound in the uk...

seeker Wed 06-Feb-13 17:19:47

I would think it was a typo! But I would say Aye-than- I think anybody would.

ladymia Wed 06-Feb-13 17:14:00

I know an Aithan and it's pronounced "A-Tan"

He hates his name as everyone pronounces it with a TH. Most people just call him A now

forevergreek Wed 06-Feb-13 16:17:09

Like Ethan. But I would spell it Ethan if so

I"m going with it rhyming with Nathan.

deleted203 Wed 06-Feb-13 15:56:09

I'd pronounce it Nathan without the N.

Gwennan Wed 06-Feb-13 15:56:02

I'm going to plump for Athan (like Nathan without the N) but it could be EYE-than.

zippey Wed 06-Feb-13 15:55:06

Id pronounce it Aye-fan.

Like the infamous Ythan challenge in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

hellokitty123 Wed 06-Feb-13 15:53:09

I'd pronounce Aithan as Ai-than. Is there any other way confused?

weaselm4 Wed 06-Feb-13 15:50:31

I would say Ethan as it seems similar to Aoife. Mind you, it doesn't have the 'i', so I dunno.. <only an eighth Irish emoticon>

AlohaMama Wed 06-Feb-13 15:46:45

Never heard of it but when I say it, it sounds like a name I should have heard of, iyswim. I would pronounce like nathan, ay-than. How else could it be pronounced, iy-than?

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Wed 06-Feb-13 15:31:21

After struggling with what sounded like Aiden in my head I decided it sounds more like
Ethan.

Is it a name OP?

BabyRoger Wed 06-Feb-13 15:24:00

Yes, like Nathan or Aiden I would assume I had misheard Aiden

LadyInPink Wed 06-Feb-13 15:22:29

Like Nathan but without the 'N'! What other way is there confused unless it's confused with Aiden. Never heard of it and not particularly keen.

edinfirst Wed 06-Feb-13 15:18:41

Just that, really, DH and I really like this name pronounced one way (I won't tell you which) but I am worried that it's not clearly pronounced like that and the poor wee soul would have a liftetime of correcting people so glad of your gut reactions. Thanks smile
