Jemima

I like it because its biblical as my ds name is also biblical. It also has a quirky British feel to it, which I love (though I'm not from Britain)! BUT I really dislike the name Gemma...which slightly puts me off and really is my only reservation about the name, as I'm afraid it will get shortened to this. If any of you have or know a Jemima, does this happen? Also what kind of reactions do you get to to the name? Oh and I don't mind the puddle duck associations Smile

I love Jemima, and I've only met one in years and years. She would be mid-teens now. I think it more usually gets shortened to Jem by friends, but the ones I've known were more often called Jemima and not Jem.

Grin @ Jim!!! Does Gemma immediately come to mind when people hear the name? It's weird I LOVE Jemima but HATE Gemma, I see them as too completely different names but I read on an old thread that some people got shortened to Gemma which IMO ruins the name! Sorry to any Gemma's out there it's just I have a really bad association with a person called Gemma! Blush

Francescarose do you think the name wears well on your colleague, as I know it would be adorable on a little girl but wonder about it on an adult?! Though Jemima Khan wears the name well!

I hate the name Gemma to OP, I know a really spiteful horrible want to punch in the face kind of girl called Gemma and I know it's an assumption but everyone else I know called that has those same tendencies IMO. Jemima is lovely. Jemima rose would work really well to.

I have a Jemima and LOVE her name, obviously!

Most of her little 2yo friends can't say 'Jemima' and call her Mima. Her best friend pronounces it Jemma (which I hate) and she calls herself Jima (which I love) but all adults call her Jemima so the nicknames will probably grow out over time.

Oh and I sometimes call her Jimmy when dh isn't listening Grin

I am a Gemma who sometimes gets called Jemima, but Ive never heard it go the other way around.

Jemima is a beautiful name and I would imagined be shortened to Jem. Mima / Mimi are also good nns.

Lovely name - would never associate it with Gemma as a shortening.

Like ellesabe my Jemima is shortened to Mima by DD1 (aged 2 and can't say Jemima yet) and DS calls her Jimmyima which I think is sweet. So Jimmy is also a possible nickname here too.

I have had some really lovely comments about her name and i really love it's quirkiness.

I have a nine week old Jemima. Her 20 mo sister calls her Mima, so I do too by default. Or Jimjam. Grin

Either way, it's a gorgeous name.

Jemima is lovely, always reminds me of the little girl in chitty chitty bang bang (I think thats a nice thing lol). I agree theres a British quirkiness to it that you can't quite put your finger on. Classic, neither old-fashioned or modern, easy to pronouce and a one-way-to-spell-it name. Totally different from Gemma, don't worry. A good choice.
