Which completely inoffensive names do you absolutely hate for no justifiable reason?

I will start.

Francis.

Loathe it. Couldn't say why really. There are no bad connotations - it's neither 'chav' nor 'toff'. It's not made-up or too-trendy or old-fashioned. I couldn't say that the sound of it is awful. It doesn't remind me someone who bullied me at school. It's not even boring. I just fucking hate that name. Whenever I am introduced to a new baby called Francis, my reaction is always: "But why? For pity's sake, why? Out of all the possible names available, you chose Francis? You have some seriously terrible taste there, people." "Gosh, how lovely."

Same goes for Christopher. And Jenny.

Perfectly inoffensive names. Could give no good reason for my antipathy whatsoever.

Not sure if that is a rational or irrational hate but I find these names so overused and dull.

sorrrrry, chloe and sophie
wet wet wet

NigellasGuest Wed 21-Nov-12 15:40:42

Agree re. Toby. Sounds so wet, I don't know why! Reminds me of a grown man sucking his thumb or something

boschy Wed 21-Nov-12 13:08:02

I think there's a pronunciation thing with Freya. When I first heard it, about 30 years ago, it was "Frere" a bit like the french word. Now it seems to be "Fray-er", which I dont like so much.

MrsMiller81 Tue 20-Nov-12 21:27:29

Freya - can't stand it

GrrrArghZzzzYaayforall8nights Sun 18-Nov-12 14:37:30

ifancyashandy Sun 18-Nov-12 14:17:47

Amelia (medley mouthed)
Tim / Timothy (just so, wet)
Ruth (how could anyone look at a newborn and think to call them this most boring of names?!)
Colin (see above)

flowerygirl Sun 18-Nov-12 14:01:53

Isaac and Jacob are awful! I think we have Twighlight to thank for Jacob's new popularity!

For no reason at all I can't stand Alexander, think it's because it's always shortened to Alex and then it could be a boy or girl!

My dcs are still in the clear - DH went out early!

youonlysingwhenyourewinning Sat 17-Nov-12 20:08:01

My name, my 3 children's name and my dog's name are all listed here.

Only dh in the clear and his name is the worst of all grin

Crazytictac Sat 17-Nov-12 19:45:00

Love Toby / Tobias

Perfectly fine names which I hate:

Maddison
Ava / Evie
Anything hyphenated with May / Mae
Tara
Clementine

Isaac
Neil
Kyle
Jayden/ Jayden etc
Harrison
Bailey
Seth
Stanley

Just read whole thread. Neither of my DCs are listed at all, but both their "if he had been a girl" names are, repeatedly. As am I, but I dislike it too!

I think it is totally reasonable to have irrational hate names. I didn't list my rational hate names. The reason I gave for the first group is apparently coincidental - DS1 is OT too but in a different way.

Samuel, Isaac, Isaiah, Jacob - anything very Old Testament.

Lucas, Elliott - just fucking hate these names. No reason.

flowerygirl Sat 17-Nov-12 18:25:02

Totally agree MichelleObarmy!

MichelleObarmy Sat 17-Nov-12 16:37:48

Cheeky chappie 'He's a real little BOY, our boy'-ish names - Harry, Charlie, Alfie, Jack, Finn and that ilk of names. Bore off.
