Baby names

Unusual (but not made up) boy's name

So we are having DS2. Thrilled apart from the slog that is finding a name that DH and I actually both like. We stupidly gave DS1 both names we eventually agreed on as a first and middle name, rather than saving one for any future children.

We are so rubbish with names at this point, we are even calling the bump the same pet name we call DS1 with the term "little" in front of it. Ooops.

So that DS2 actually gets a name, could anyone help?

Neither of us is a fan of traditional English names (no Harry, James, William etc). Nice names but not for us. I am not British by origin and our DS1 has a family name from my country - think Eastern Europe somewhere.

I don't want a made-up name but looking for something that is a bit unusual. If it has an Eastern European flavour, that helps. Any ideas?

Oh, these are the ones that DH and I are currently looking at, but none of them feel like 'the one'.

Emil
Reuben
Orson
Lazar
Ira
Silas
Solomon
Asher
Luca
Johan
Zevi

.....but none of these feel really like a name we can imagine DS2 being called. It's just that we've seen them somewhere and stuck them on a list.

Totally lost.

I LOVE Reuben but can't use it as DD is a Ruth so it doesn't 'go' Sad.

I know what you mean though, we are expecting DC2 in 12 weeks and we have NO names in the pipeline. Nada. Nothing. Not a single idea.

Sad

It is very stressful.

Thanks for the responses. I'm worried that Darko may seem unusual in the UK for a child who is likely to be very fair. And Jovan I also like but have close relatives who are Ivan/John, other forms of the same name.

Unfortunately I know two Jagos. And I'm worried Janis is a bit girly in the UK....

Thank you though - this is all helpful.

Well, for a boy I am presuming "Yarn-is" would be correct? It's a lovely name.

But sadly my PIL live next door to a woman called Janice and DH's aunt is Janis (after Janis Joplin, so pretty cool).

But all meaning that Janis for a boy would require lots of explanation. And my MIL is still getting over DS1's name....Grin

Omri
Amir
Drago
Goran
Dusan
Maksim
Stepan
Milan
Elias
Isaac

From your list, Johan, Lazar, Solomon and Zevi really stand out -- great names imo.

Would you consider Laserian (strangely enough, an Irish saint from a very long time ago)?

Well, math had DS1's middle name on the list so you are all being a great help. I've not thought of a few of these at all, so will quickly run them past DH.

Although sadly Goran makes me have inappropriate kinky thoughts about a certain tennis player so that one's out for my child.....

Lie to the Inlaws then - tell them it is spelt yarnis and just put it correctly on other paper work - they will not find out for 10 years or so by which time no explination will be needed Wink

Some of these are diminutives, but I think you could use them as names in their own right in England. I like Emil, and the connection with the book is cool.

Thanks everyone. Some great names on here. Just trying to balance a name we love with it being at least vaguely recognisable in the UK. No-one can ever spell or pronounce DS1's name (although it is very short!) which we hadn't expected as we didn't think it was very unusual. Whoops.
