Baby monitors

A warning baby monitor

I have an angelcare baby monitor with a sensor pad. On Saturday morning I went into the nursery to find her with the cord from the sensor pad coiled around her body from her ankles to her neck.

I have just telephoned angelcare to report this given the risk to babies. I am horrified by the near-miss to my baby but even more horrified when they told me this was a known issue with the monitors and that there had been a recall in the US as two babies had died. Apparently they have a cord cover you need to order separately to prevent this risk - I hadn't heard about this and I'm devastated that the thing I bought to keep my baby safe could have hurt her or worse.

That must have been terrifying for you!

The recall was last November, and it was fairly well publicised here eg making the national newspapers, and here's the MN thread from then

The company certainly left the impression that all would be supplied with cord covers now. Is that not the case? Or is it a case of how to make aware parents who might have a pre-recall monitor kept to use for subsequent babies (as they might not have noticed the earlier publicity)?

It really was, I find myself thinking about it all the time as ultimately it was me who missed the risk - it never occurred to me she could reach the cord. We bought our monitor 3 years ago for my son and I had my daughter in October. Possibly as my daughter was born in October I missed the notices about it in November. The lady from angelcare said they were getting calls all the time. When she told me there had been two 'incidents' in the US I asked her what she meant and she said two babies had died. I just burst into tears - to put my daughter at risk like that. My monitor is going in the bin. I can't understand why it's still on the market.

We had to ring up to order the safety things I think
