Another knitting issue - does this pattern work??

I have a really sweet little knitting book and like one of the throw patterns in it. I have only just started it and have already found something a bit misleading and altered it.
This is the misleading bit. The pattern is
K1 p2togX3, [K1,yon]x6, p2togx3, rep from * to last st, K1.
In the [K1, yon] bit, if you only do yon on the last of the 6 repeats and go straight to p2tog, you are going to lose a stitch aren't you? I am right, no? So I am changing the last repeat to yrn.
There are 5 rows st st between the pattern rows so it is a little while before I can see if I have done the right thing. There are over 250 stitches so it takes a while and I am really bad at counting! But first pattern row worked.
My question is - does the pattern work? On the next pattern row I am purling 2 together 3 times over existing p2togs, if you see what I mean. Then creating 6 holes, to compensate for the next 6 p2 togs. The number of stitches will still be correct but I can't see how the pattern will work. Am I just being paranoid/dim? I have already done one pattern repeat but it was when I was following the pattern so all my stitch numbers were wrong anyway.

Sorry the bold bit means nothing significant.
The pattern is called Wave and shell throw - the shells are done separately so it is the Wave bit I am doing. Attempting.

If I've understood your question I think this is just a terminology problem. So for the final YO because it is before a purl stitch they expect you to know to wrap the yarn around the needle rather than just bring the yarn forward as you might before a knit stitch. The pattern does make sense to me provided you think about it that way

So yes, I think you're doing the right thing.

YO is yarn over. If you wrap the yarn right around the needle you will get the YO hole before the P2tog. So yes, six holes (increases) and six decreases compensate.

The pattern will work, gradually all the blocks of increasing and decreasing will pull the work into a wave shape - does the pattern have a picture with it?

It's odd that it's all stocking stitch except those P2 togs but there are lots of variations on these wave/feather-and-fan patterns.

It's simpler when it's just called a yarnover and you're left to decide what you do with the yarn to get it to where it needs to be for the next stitch!

Thanks ever so much, I am almost on my next pattern row! I will report back...
