I'd agree that some work with fabric and wool is art. Have a look at art quilts. Fabric is a medium just like paint or pastels although granted a lot of the talk on here is the usual patchwork and quilting or knitting. Embroidery is also artistic, especially if it is free hand.

I have just been on my 'stitching' course today - so far, after about 8 lessons not a single stitch has been sewn. It is all design using printing, watercolours, pastels, pencils etc.

I suppose what I am really saying is that the edges of what is art and what is craft are blurred. If you want to talk about art as in painting and drawing then you should start a thread about what specifically you want to talk about but a lot of the stitching that people are doing is artistic.

FWIW I would like to see more threads about photography but I don't know enough about the technical side to start a thread that I can really join in!

Yes, I agree she probably meant painting and drawing and only for their own sake, iyswim. I was just saying that although the OP thinks this section is dominated by sewing, knitting and crocheting (which it is), that doesn't necessarily mean that they are crafts and nothing to do with art.

The design course I am doing is sketchbook based and isn't too different from art journals (maybe not different at all except my sketchbook has a purpose beyond making a journal for its own sake) and art journals are largely painting and drawing. It is a question of different labels for the same thing more than anything.

I do agree she should start a thread about whatever aspect of art she finds interesting and see where it takes her. She'll probably not be interest in drawing or painting at all and wants to talk sculpture.
