So for Christmas instead of getting a random (usually not really thought about) present I would get a load of cheap plates at asda and decorate them with kids handprints

How do I do it?
I know I need a porcelain pen.. That's about as far as I got! I keep seeing about baking them, what's that all about?! Also can I get paints for footprints and put them on little ones feet?

If you have read this far then feel free to add some ideas what else to put in

Hi locket juice, I am definitely not an expert at this but didn't want your post unanswered. You either need ceramic paint or alternatively can use a sharpie (have a look on pinterest, there are tutorial). You need to then bake your design at low temperature (again try to find a tuto) to set the ink and make it permanent.

Re paint for footprint, not sure it is adviced to use ceramics paint on feet and if you use normal paint I doubt it would stick.

Ideally you could also buy some unglazed plates, paint them and then take them to your nearerst ceramics cafe as they might be able to glaze it/fire it for you?

Hope this helps

Pebeo make good bake-on ceramic paints.

No personal experience to report Locketjuice but was looking at these this morning.

(presumably instructions about heat-fixing design will be included)

Or perhaps you could use a combination of the following:

here and here (although perhaps your dc a little young for free-hand designs as yet)

You will need Pebeo ceramic paints and an oven. Really easy to do, get a small roller for the DIY shop, pour paint into a small takeaway tray then roller it onto your DCs hands and feet. Take the plate, mug etc to the appendage and press it hard. Write the name and date. Leave to air dry and then bake according to the instructions. Job done!
