Knitting Injury!

I seem to have broken the skin on my index finger by repeatedly stabbing it with my knitting needle when pushing the needle through the yarn! Is this normal? Is there some tried and tested way to avoid this?

Oh no! sounds painful. Sad Could you put a plaster over it when you knit so it doesn't catch the skin? Or try blunter needles?

If it's any consolation my wrist has started clicking when I knit. But I don't want to stop!

I hope you feel better soon.

I rubbed middle and index finger sore when knitting socks with a fairly tight ply yarn. Just put plasters on them. Yours sounds painful though - can you soak in salty water and then use plasters.

Yes, I agree, I would put plasters on it.

I once knitted for an entire weekend solidly (those were the days!) and got repetitive strain injury in my ring finger on my left hand where I had gripped the knitting so tightly.

I have also stabbed myself in the side with knitting needles while trying to get in the car holding several bags including my knitting bag.

thanks for the answers! hazardous business this knitting; I think you're right about blunt needles though, I was using very old 2 3/4 needles better ('borrowed' from my granny) and looking at them more closely one definitely has an unusually sharp end!
Still I have a very cute hstd & bootees set, :)

I have a tiny bit of uneven-ness on one of my front teeth - doing handsewing about 25 years ago, needle got stuck in cloth, pulled it out using my teeth as I didn't have a thimble handy to push it through - and I felt a little crumble of tooth!

I've never held pins or a needle between my teeth again!

Lolly your knitting technique is a bit odd think?

I use a bit it micropore tape. In the end MIL found a neoprene finger cover in a magazine. Soft and flexible to put on and knit without grief or rub. I also use them for crochet as I am a firm holder of my hook and get raw bits.

Instead of using your finger tip to push the left needle back, try to use your right needle to lift the stitch over and off the left one. I gave myself a very sore finger doing what you describe. A change of technique is needed, otherwise you'll just continue to hurt your finger, and will eventually develop a huge callous!

Thank you MrsPennyapple! I must be doing exactly what you say. I will have your post next to me next time I knit; it's going to be hard to change something that comes so automatically though.
I'm also taking note if neoprane as plan b!
