If the paper doesn't cut cleanly on a brand new machine after the 2nd go, what should I do?

Not got a Big Shot - but on a Sizzix I would cut a few trials on scrap paper & card. Sometimes the dies take a bit of time to bed in Smile

Not clueless. It should cut through really thick cardstock. I've cut mountboard with my thick cuts and sizzix dies in the Big Shot. Where did you get it from? Can you contact them to ask. With the sizzix I'd suggest using a shim but if it's not cutting paper even then I think there's something wrong

what die are you using sizzix, sizzlets or ellison

Report
Carolinett · 29/05/2006 20:41

ellison big die or small die

Oh thanks for all the replies!
I am using the little thin cut Ellison flower die that comes with the big shot, just cutting the paper it came with. This cut fine a couple of times and then didn't cut cleanly...I put a piece of paper underneath the plates - the shim idea? - and then it worked again.

Whizzz - if a new die hasn't bedded in yet, what would be happening...would it fail to cut cleanly every time like my experience, or would it be different?

I have gone bananas and ordered myself a stack of dies plus ratatat and GAW so if I ever get a bit better at using them, I would be happy to cut for other people!!! I ordered the 3D lilac and hydrangea which look fab! Smile

You shouldn't really need a shim with the Big Shot but if it works then Fab. I'd try to position the die just off center- not at the edge zand not in the middle. I generally tend to cut the thin dies in pairs side by side.

What dies have you ordered then? I love tghe look of GAW and fancy buying it but can't afford it atm

Hi pixiefish and thanks for the die positioning tips!

I have ordered several embossing folders and a few dies I thought would be good for scrap booking - some wavy & zig zag lines on an extended cuts shape, some frames and the circle shapes. Also the picket fence, the Ellison 3D handbag and big daisies and some little Ellison thin cuts of flowers and animals.

Which has well and truly blown my budget Sad
I think I might sell some on after a bit or swap them! Happy to cut you some GAW anytime you like BTW! I got it from the beaniebuddy as recommended by mumsnet Smile

And I know NOTHING about scrap booking. Just when I am going to find the time is still a mystery, so I may be trying to sell it all second hand again in a few weeks Grin. Still, I am looking to make a few changes in my life so this is an experimental one I have made...to spend time and money on being creative, because it makes me feel good Smile

Don't want to rain on your parade but I'm really looking forward to seeing what you make with the 3d handbag. I bought the 3d carry all bag and am at a total loss as to what to do with it apart for wedding favours Grin

let me know how you get on.

If you want any cut that I have so that you can see before you buy then email me at thepixiefish at yahoo dot co dot uk and i'll email you my list of dies. Loads of others here will do the same I'm sure

Pull out the White board on the BS as far as you can

Place on top of the white board 1 clear cuting plate
Then put the paper/card on top
Put the die on top of the paper
Put the second clear cutting plate on top
So it's like a sandwich

hold the whole lot and push them under the compression
start turning the handle BUT hold on the the end as long as you can.

If that doesn't work throw it through the bluddy window Wink

Caroline- just a general observation. do you agree with me that the bs could have been better designed if it had been slightly longer so the white plate wasn't quite so precariously perched on the bed? or is it just me?

Carolinett · 30/05/2006 18:18

No it's not you, I agree.

Bet it was a fella that designed it Wink

Hi Pixiefish! I was thinking with the 3D handbag:

  • attaching to a card for 3D interest
  • using to give children money in
  • putting a gift tag inside it
  • using for presents of tiny stuff like jewellery

mousie- the 3d bag would just about hold an almond so not a lot of use to put anything else in

mousiemousie · 30/05/2006 18:54

Aaaah. So a lot of almond presents will be given by me this christmas then!

Sorry - Advanced Crafts via their website - they seemed fairly cheap and that handbag one isn't available everywhere it seems!
