Repeat 12 week scan - am I being a hypochondriac?

I had my 12 week scan earlier this week, saw the baby (it looked a bit like it was dancing, possibly YMCA), got a few blurry pics...but I have to go back in next week to have another go at the nuchal fold test, and also because its stomach hadn't closed up yet (11w5).

Is this 'normal'? I've generally managed to avoid panic googling anything as the brief ten minutes I couldn't resist threw up all kinds of terrifying chromosomal disorders, and I didn't want to read any more.

Should I just try to think about relaxing things, or read v v involving books to take my mind of it until Monday? Or am I worrying about nothing?

Hi Cattelady,

Very natural to feel panicky, don't worry.
It might literally be just to check the stomach is closing. It may also be your hospital policy to re-do a nuchal fold if they couldn't get it first time. Ours was dancing around during our 12 week scan but because they dated me at 13 weeks, they wouldn't do repeat nuchal and sent me for Quad bloods instead.
What they might do is suggest that you have CVS or amnio if the stomach isn't closing just to double check there are no chromosomal abnormalities.
Fingers crossed it's nothing, but until then distract yourself, read and enjoy the sun until you know something more definitive. Stay away from DR GOOGLE!

Let us know how you get on, xx

I think it's common to need to repeat parts of the scan if the baby's dance routine prevented them getting good measurements.

Thanks for the replies, I'm a professional hypochondriac, and more neurotic than ever since I was taken off my venlafaxine.

Repeat scan is on Monday, so I'll hopefully know more then, and will post back. Annoyingly they binned my blood sample from Monday as they do nuchal folds and bloods on the same day. I trashed a cardi bleeding on it too, all in all I'd rate Tuesday's appointment 7/10, and most of that would be for the baby's YMCA/Agadoo

All sounds very usual and unconcerning.

The abdomen usually closes up between 9-11 weeks so they just want to check that that is happening as normal. A friend had a repeat dating scan a week later for precisely that reason.

Hope all goes well on Monday.

Hi everyone, today was fine. Stomach sealed up, midwife said everything looked reassuringly normal.

Child quieter today, luckily so they managed to get decent pics too.
