Anyone have genetic testing after spina bifida

Hi all

I'm just wondering whether anyone had generic testing after having a baby with spina bifida?

The doctors I dealt with dont seem to think we need genetic testing but I'm not sure i can settle without it.

Does anyone have any experience of anything similar

No but DS4 has hydrocephalus which is linked to spina bifida. We are waiting for an appointment with the geneticist.

Hi OP, sorry you're having to go through this experience. There is isnt a genetic test which could tell you whether you would be likely to have a baby with spina bifida. Athough possible genetic links with spina bifida are being researched, the understanding is that even those genes which appear to play some role in contributing to spina bifida have only a very minor effect. Spina bifida is a problem which occurs very early in the development of the nervous system of the baby. We do know that taking folic acid supplimemts significantly reduces the number of babies with spina bifida and this is the best thing you can do to avoid reccurrence.

All the best for the future Smile
