Antenatal tests

Couldn't get measurements for my scan and only offered me bloods to be taken at 15 weeks!!!

Hello ladies... I had my 12 week scan the other day at 12+2 and she couldn't get the measurement as baby kept putting its chin down. She gave up and said ask your midwife to do a blood test at your 15 week appointment. I was quite disappointed as its a worry to still think about. However now after I've had time to think I'm a bit cross that I wasn't offered either another scan to try again or a blood test earlier than 15 weeks (would the blood test work before 15 weeks?) I'm cross purely because if I wait till 15 weeks I then have to wait for those results an if it comes back high risk ill wait for an amniocentesis then wait for the results for that and if its bad news (I think we've decided to terminate if it is) I'd have to wait for an appointment for this too! I'm guessing we'd be getting on for 20 weeks by now which doesn't sit well with me at all to have to make that horrible decision! Am I being unreasonable or is this a normal situation?
Sorry for the rant Confused x

I'm a midwife and currently 19 weeks pregnant. I had the same situation as you.
The Quad test is usually performed with weeks 14-18 of pregnancy and are 79% accurate as opposed to nuchal scan and bloods which is 85%.

Quad test results come back pretty quickly , in less than a week if high risk, usually a matter of days.

In all honesty it is not uncommon for the baby not to cooperate for the nuchal fold measurement to be taken and the NHS simply doesn't have the resources to offer numerous scans in the hope that the baby is in a better position next time.

I'm over 35 years old, therefore increased risk factor, I'm a midwife in the trust I'm being looked after and even that isn't enough to be offered a second scan. Like you I too would terminate as I have other children that I must consider too.

Sorry posted before I finished , but wanted to say please try not to be too disappointed if you're midwife is unable to arrange a further scan for you.

Good luck with everything

I'd even be happier with an earlier blood test to be honest just so it wasn't too far along if I do have to make a decision

I understand that . It is most accurate between 16-18 weeks, you can request it earlier (I had mine at 14+3 as like you I wanted to know).

The midwife can take these bloods and can be taken from 14 weeks so no real reason why you can't have it a week earlier.

Hi not sure if this will be helpful or not but the exact same thing happened at my 12-week scan and after a day of agonising, we decided to go for a private scan and it was the best decision for us and worth every penny. Good luck!!

Hi the same thing happened to me. I had the quadruple blood test at 14 weeks and it came back with a 1 in 5 risk. I opted for the private nifty test as I didn't want an amnio and am still waiting for the result.

I wouldn't recommend this quadruple test to anyone as it seems quite unreliable. Next time I'll just go straight for a nifty at 10 weeks.

They should be able to do your bloods earlier?

Exactly the same thing happened to us today... Only offered us the blood test at 16 weeks, so were going for a private scan on Saturday, they guarantee a result so hopefully will know more then. Won't get the full picture til Tuesday as they squeezed us in on Saturday because I cried - they usually do the blood 48 hours in advance, but they'll have to do mine on Monday am, and call me on Tuesday, but they will be able to say the nuchal measurement and nasal bone thing etc.

Same happened with me, except my midwife appointment was actually not til 17 weeks as our EDD changed at the scan. When I got there, the midwife didn't have the right bottles for the blood so I had to go back at 18 weeks. Now waiting for the results but feel like it would now be too late for us to make a decision if it is bad news. It was made clear to me that (where I live at least) I would not be able to go for another scan and I just had to wait for blood test.

I'd say if you can afford it OP get a private one done. I had to have quad done and came back very low risk 1:4600, yet at the anomaly scan they picked up two markers and I had an amnio (waiting for results)and as I'm nearly 23 weeks this makes it a lot harder to consider outcome. At least you'd know earlier. Xx
