Antenatal tests

what can be detected at 12 week scan?

I recently had a late miscarriage at 17 weeks. Waiting on the postmortem results but I am just wondering if there was a genetic issue such as Turners or Downs would it have been picked up at the 12 week scan? Should add the scan was done by midwives and they did seem thorough.

I'm sorry for your loss.

As far as I know the 12 week combined with the triple blood test can detect down syndrome but is only around 60% accurate (I may be wrong on the latter point)

I hope you're doing ok and don't have to wait too long for the results

Hi nearlyready, I am not a medical professional but as far as I'm aware the 20 week scan is really the first time the baby is large/ developed enough to allow the detailed scan necessary to detect a lot of the abnormalities which would suggest genetic issues (e.g. Heart defects which often suggest chromosomal issues). My baby was not diagnosed with Edwards syndrome until 26 weeks and after lots of scans (from 20 weeks onwards) detected soft markers suggesting there may have been a genetic problem. An amnio was still needed to confirm though.

I am so sorry for your loss x

Thank you all for replyingThanks
Rufous Im so sorry that you are waiting too. I was never offered a nuchal fold measurement as I am in Northern Ireland and I dont think it is available here on NHS. I might be wrong but there was no mention of anything at the booking appointment. I think I would have to see someone privately.
I had really bad Hyperemesis and I have found some info that came up with a link between this and Triploidy.

Sorry for your loss. Our hospital sends a leaflet out with 12 scan appointments, the leaflet makes it clear that very few abnormalities are detected at 12 weeks and that the scan is for dating purposes. They do say that only major problems such as no skull bone are detected.
