Early scan baginal or abdominal.

I have a scan book with babybond when I will be just over 8 weeks. I got appointment card in a mail and it says the scan may have to be vaginal. I don't really fancy that. At 8 weeks did you have vaginal or abdominal scan?

My 9 week scan was abdominal. It was amazing to see DD waving her little arms and kicking at high speed! Perhaps vaginal is if they can't get a good image abdominally?

Why not just wait for the normal 12 week or whatever it is scan?

I've been offered an 8 week scan (for unknown reasons!) by the hospital.

Does being hippo like overweight tip the scales in favour of a vaginal scan?

weeweewee... are you diabetic or have a thyroid prob? NICE guidelines now we have to give an early scan for these medical problems..

babynelly .... if you have a higher BMI than usual you won't see a lot at 8 weeks abdowise.. but to be honest.. if if you were really skinny it's not a lot to see at 8 weeks anyway. all jelly bean Like still at that stage. why are you haveing such an early private scan ? previous history ? or courisity ?

I had a private scan at 10 weeks-ish which was abdominal only. At my first NHS one (12 weeks) they did abdominal first, then vaginal, then abdominal again! I'm not skinny but not fat - think it was just about the position the baby was in and trying to get all the measurements done properly. I think they do less at early private scans (unless for specific medical reasons): mine was essentially just to check there was a baby in there that was the right kind of size for dates; I got the impression the NHS one was more thorough, which is maybe why they have to use different, um, 'approaches' if they can't see what they need to straight away!

Worley No, have no medical problems (that I'm aware of) and last pregnancy was completely textbook with no complications. The only possible reason I can think of is that I'm very unsure of my dates and told the GP that so perhaps he asked for a dating scan? He didn't mention it at the time though so who knows, I suppose I'll find out tomorrow!

I had an early scan at seven weeks - I got into a panic over what turned out to be an implantation bleed and took myself to the EPAU. The sonographer said the only way she'd see anything so early on would be via a vaginal scan. It was absolutely not a problem in any way - the instrument is a slim wand and the procedure is not painful or even uncomfortable. Try not to worry!

Thanks bluestocking. I think I'm trying to find other things to be worried about because I'm terrified that there'll be bad news at the scan. It seems so foolish to have gotten excited on the basis of two pregnancy tests IYSWIM and tomorrow will be the first "confirmation" of there being and actual pregnancy or not.

And then of course, if it is good news, the worry'll begin as soon as the scan is over!

I had an abdominal scan at 9 weeks, however my sister had to have a vaginal scan at 11 weeks as they couldn't get a clear view :)

Thank you for your responses, sorry for the misspellings :)
I dont have any medical problems and do have a normla BMI, I am small build and pretty slim so hopefully no vaginal scan needed. I had a miscarriage before this pregnancy that is a main reason why I want an early reassurance. My midwife did not contact me yet, I am feeling inpatient. I also was getting acupuncture treatments after the miscarriage and now paranoid that it could be twins as I did not have fertility problems to start with just needed to balance out the hormones after the loss, but I know it is very unlikely as I have no family history of that.
