Amnio - anyone tell me how long recovery takes?

Hi I am due to have an amnio in two weeks time. My husband is going to take the day off work to drive me to and from the hospital. We also have an 18 month old daughter who will need looking after. The plan is to have it on a Friday so I have the weekend to recover, while my husband does all the physical stuff like picking up our daughter.

Do you think a weekend is long enough for me to have my husband helping or would you say I would need him to take the Monday off too?

We live in France and my Gyne hasn't really explained the recovery aspect of the procedure too well!

I was straight up and out. It isn't really painful, just odd feeling and there was no lingering pain afterwards as far as I can recall. I don't think your dh needs to take the Monday off. I had a 12 month old at the time and can't remember any problems lugging him about.

I had mine & was told to rest for 24 hours afterwards. However, the day after that I got stomach pains & was told to take the next 2 days off work & rest. I was very lucky in that my mum was staying with us & could look after DS1. If it's not going to be difficult I would take the extra time off, better to be safe than sorry.

Hmm - I was a bit shaky for about an hour afterward (the kind nurse made me a cup of tea and sat with me for a bit), but then walked home afterward and was fine. I'd say save the day's holiday for when the baby arrives!

Thanks all, I think will see how it goes, my daughter is just so full on at the moment and I struggle to carry her now so don't want to cause any damage after the amnio, am paranoid of course!

Another effect I wasn't expecting was that I came up horribly allergic to the antiseptic used to clean my stomach! Ended up having to see the doctor & have a course of steroids.

I took the day off work and just chilled.

Didnt have much pain or discomfort afterwards, to be honest, i had too much to do to be laying round.

I fully intended on spending the day on the sofa with filums, but ended up doing a load of stuff that i probably shouldnt have done. (mountain of washing/cleaned the bathroom/sorted dinner out etc)

Good luck, its a nerve wracking time x
