Antenatal tests

Echogenic bowel, is it Cystic Fibrosis?

Trying to help a friend not to worry her self to death.

She is expecting her third DC, currently 20 weeks.

The scan showed echogenic bowel. Three scans showed the same.

She has had blood tests, that show she is immune to relevant infections.

No other markers for DS.

There is no evidence of bleeding.

Now three week wait for CF test.

She is 22 years old and no known history, her mother has had 11 MCs don't know why.

How worried should she be? They seem to have ruled out all other reasons and CF is the only one that is left.

Would be grateful for any experiences or advice.

Your poor friend, she must be so worried.

It could be CF but it might not be. I don't have much experience of this, but my DD3 does have CF, and I have now met many other parents with children with CF and nobody has come across this situation.

Its no good saying try not to worry, because who wouldn't, but I hope your friend has good news soon.

Just wish I had something more useful I could say that would actually help.

I work in screening and this soft marker is a much contested one. Yes, on paper it may be that it is an indication of cf, but the vast majority of cases when it is seen on a scan turn out to be nothing at all (ie. not ds, not cf, just a variant on the norm). Most reasons for EB are not either cf or ds - simply something that is noted but doesn't indicate anything clinically significant . I wish your friend well - have been there myself with 4 of my dcs at 20 weeks!

Saw the consultant today and was told CMV infection.

Friend was unwell with swollen glands at 10 weeks, so think this was when the infection happened.

Anyone know anything about this?
