AIBU?

Even if one of my DCs murdered someone, I still wouldn't wish them dead.

I keep seeing on the news that Raoul Moats Mum has said he'd be better off dead.

I believe it's from an interview she did with The Sun newspaper, I haven't read the paper and can't get it online for some reason.

Have I missed something?

I gather he'd threatened her life and had caused her trouble since he was 19, but even so, AIBU to be shocked at a Mum saying such an awful thing about one of her children in a national newspaper (given I don't know the full facts).

I haven't noticed any threads about it on here today, I know it's The Sun, but can they have taken what she said so much out of context that this isn't what she said and they've just put a spin on it to sell newspapers?

YANBU - I agree with you but tbh it's such a tragic and unique situation, it's hard to know exactly how I'd react.

well... given how he has turned out, maybe she's never liked him that much anyway??

sorry, that's a gross assumption, but y'know, maybe they never had a great relationship and tht's why he threatened her life and why she thinks he's better off dead

i have to agree with you though, i can't imagine ever wanting my children dead, no matter what they'd done

YABU. You have no idea of the hell he may have put her through over years.

did you never read what alexandra's mother said about her? far more selfish and nasty that was. this is nothing compared to that

I am on the middle on this as i have never been in a position like that, but the story says he did once threaten to kill her.

i reckon she said it as she knows thats how it will probably end up anyway, so she has more than likely resigned herself to the fact she will never see him again.

i do feel for her, it must be terrible.

Who is alexandra?

Proud, I've been thinking about it all day. About what kind of place a Mum must be in to want the child she gave birth to, and brought up, to be dead.

I'm against corporal punishment, so I wouldn't want anyone dead, so to say you think your child would be better off dead is just so shocking.

Are there some things I can't say or ask?

they should bring the death penalty back. maybe that may deter people who think they can get away with shooting or stabbing a person.

i bet that would help solve some of the problems in this day and age

burke. won the x factor same time as jls. her mom went on and on about it was only good coz it meant that she could now pay for her diabetic treatment and that was the only thing that was important. it was the way she said it. as if alexandra was a cash cow, and she was the only one who was important. no pride in her daughters acheivemtns at all.
this mom is only being realistic. if i knew my kid had done something so awful, and there was an army of cops out looking for him and would then lock him up for life in prison, i would think the kinder thing for my dc would be death. but, i wouldnt say it on national media. just in privacy of my own head.

Yes it does act as a deterrent doesn't it? That's why they have such a low crime rate in the States in the U.S which have the death penalty isn't it...?

It doesn't act as a deterrent, never has and never will. We've had the death penalty in some place and some form for a few thousand years now and we still have people murdering each other.

That's a debate for another topic anyway.

Maybe we are all blind that we allow murderers to go down for a few years then they are released. free as a bird. shame we cant say the same for his/her poor victim

I agree with longer sentences in many cases. Some sentences are ridiculously short but that doesn't mean I have to support the death penalty.

Report
LetThereBeRock · 08/07/2010 21:01

I don't think they're quite free as a bird either when released. They are subject to a life licence which can see them recalled to prison at any time should it be felt that it's necessary and in the interests of the public.

However many sentences are ridiculously short even so.

To short

i thought burkes mum was in a band in the 80's? soul2soul or something?

oh and as fir the death penalty suddenly stopping murders, tell that to the states that still have a death penalty. they still have a higher crime rate than we do.

I think its impossible to know how you would feel. And regardless of what she said, and what she meant, this poor woman is going through hell right now. Do we really need to judge her?
