I was going to post this on another thread but thought it was hijacking so thought I should post it on a seperate thread.

It is a genuine question fuelled by my thinking I might be BU! I just hate the thought of what is in those pouches and jars, am convinced they add stuff to make it last ages - if not how does it last so long, and can't see how it is a good idea to feed them to a small baby. I was looking at them in the supermarket today and couldn't help but REALLY turn my nose up .

I am up for being re-educated .

AIBU?

Yes and no, for BU

The pouches and jars are subject to strict food labelling legislation, as is all our food. What they say is in there, is in there.

It is essentially tinned food. Its pretty much the same process of being heated and sealed (very untechnical way of explaining it but a quick google would reveal the method if anyone is particularly bothered)

Are they yuck? Some are, some aren't, and its a bit dependent on personal taste.

Would you eat tinned food all day ever day? I wouldn't, so I wouldn't let my child, but they have their time and place, more for some than others, depending on lifestyle and parenting choices.

YANBU for not wanting to use them, and nobody IBU for wanting to.

YABU starting a thread about a thread.

Tinned/Bottled/Pouches - they have a place - it's all about balance.

I think you'd be damned whatever - sometimes you just can't win can you?

I admit to using packets/jars when tired/going out (as a safety net) but as we're all veggie, convenience baby food is in the minority........and bliutzing up somne veggies and lentils/cheese isn[t too onerous really

I just used to puree food that Dh and I were eating. Then puree it a little less. then just chop it small. So I never really GOT jars and pouches, iyswim? And I dont really accept the time saving thing either as you would be cooking lunch/dinner for yourself. And I also think that perhaps they create fussy eaters due to the samey taste of them all, the texture of them, the possible (SOME brands) sugar content, the salt content etc. We have very healthy eaters now who are very rarely picky. I could just be lucky though.

BUT all of that is JUST my opinion. And everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I can see that some people might have other things going on in their lives that they need to focus on so a relatively healthy 'canned food' might be the best alternative to nothing, iyswim?

I agree with you most of the savoury jars I have tasted are vile. I used to work in the food industry and know that the standards and regulations for baby food are amongst the highest there is. However, they are allowed to use ingredients such as corn flour and rice flour to bulk out the ingredients.

I'm not saying they don't have a place and sometimes it can be necessary to have a jar in your bag but personally they do taste foul.

My 7 month old apparently thinks you are VU, as he won't eat my crappy lovingly prepared homemade food, but loves plum pouches and Hipp jars of goo.

Fuck it, I've got bigger things to be worrying about.

Fair enough runnybottom, fair enough! Really not meaning to criticise - if you like, i am trying to be less unreasonable . I was a little ashamed at how snobby i was being given that plenty of people use them with no ill effects! And those pouches really do contain just organic stuff. I buy ready made chicken stock - not the cubes cos they've got msg in them - so I thought maybe I was being hypocritical.

Do the vitamins and minerals stay in them in those pouches then?

Have you ever had the cookies & cream one? That's not yuck. Not that I'd know. I'd never feed that errrm poo to my darling child. I would however spoon it furiously down my gob, all cold and silky and chocolatey from the fridge

Course its about balance

When we took 6 month old ds4 camping and weaned him there- we weren't going to be blending (or storing food very safely) in a tent

Likewise ds4's bugger with fruit but will have a fruitapura pouch

But relying on them- probably not tbh

Some of the Plum Baby ones that I've used with DS seem pretty nice. They're not all that grungy brown colour that some of the other ones seem to be.

DS loves the fruit pouches and the main meals with lentils in. I use the lentil ones as sort of a tinned soup substitute. So if he's ill/teething and off his usual BLW stuff, and occasionally when we go out (although judging by the comedy value when we were in GBK the other weekend, maybe that was a mistake on reflection).

Usualsuspect - Not feeding your child canned/jarred/pouched stuff does not make you "a domestic goddess/earth mother type all organic blw " .

I never did blw. I never even heard of it until my sister did it with her dd and ds, and they are younger than my children. And I dont really know anythign about it still. And I cant AFFORD to do all organic either.

Different folks and all that. Like Sancti ( GREAT name btw!!) said it is all about balance and priorities etc. (which I also mentioned inm= my last post)

I like the fruit purees, I put them in porridge.

OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 29/04/2010 22:21

Another ditto for runnybottom.

I have a freezer full of lovingly made organic purees for my DD which she screams at if I serve up, preferring Plum and Ella's kitchen instead.

As we are doing both purees and BLW she has jars/pouches of puree and whatever I cook for her BLW best of both worlds.

I use some ready meals for being out and about but mostly it is homemade stuff. Some are better than others but do not taste as good as homemade meals. I was a snob about jars/pouches for a few months until I had to go back to work!!

My DD is not fussy at the moment (22 mths) so, I'm enjoying it while it lasts. Unbelievably she demanded to try olives when I had some yummy ones from M&S - she seemed to really like them (maybe it was because mummy was eating them though.. ). She gets lovely meals and snacks at nursery - I turned up early once and saw what they had for dinner (macaroni cheese - yum!).
