He's just a bloke in a dress with some odd and outdated ideas for gods sake!

Unfortunately it does detract from the rather better proposals of how to deal with alleged child abuse etc.

And unfortunately the Pope is not just a bloke in a dress; he has influence over millions of people.

hes an old man who heads up a religion that means a great deal to a lot of people. I am not at all religious but respect the rights of others to their views and no, I dont find flagrantly mocking an entire religion funny.

Dh and I (both work for the civil service) reckon that the person who suggested those things either

a) was desperate for a transfer to another section
b) trying to get sacked
c) put it in there for a laugh and expected his boss to notice it
d) but it in knowing that his boss is useless and doesn't ever check anything he is supposed and he'd get disciplined too.

I did chuckle tbh

YANBU

I found it hilarious!!! Shocking how so many people are getting upset about it. If you can't laugh at yourself...

Good point about it ditracting from the child abuse, though.

Glad it's not just me tittering...

I'll know a few 'faces' in hell then...

I've always said I knew I'd be warm in the afterlife, so me PMSL at this probably just raises the odds.

LittleMissHissyFit Do you think we'll be allowed to toast muffins?

LittleMissHissyFit · 25/04/2010 14:51

Ooh, I'm sure we can toast what we like!!

CHEERS!!

Not the most sensible career move. But loved the idea of the pope demonstrating forward rolls.

I don't think it was funny at all. YABU.

Marjoriew · 25/04/2010 18:48

Well I thought it was hilarious anyway. And the laugh is on him for a change I wish I'd thought of it myself.
It's nothing compared to the abuse myself and thousands of others have had to endure over decades of abuse by the Catholic Church.

Can't he take a joke?

I actually laughed out loud when I read it.

Religious people really need to lighten up.

Is this not just an extension of the old British way of taking the piss out of people who take themselves too seriously? I think many followers (not all!) of organised religions may fall into this category.

Don't know why religious types think they should somehow be immune to having the mick taken, I really don't. It's not like it could be classified as 'oppression'...

yep hillarious.

And clearly those in power here agree given the individual responsible only received a warning.

The catholic church has a lot to answer for. I remember when pope john paul II came to Africa and told people not to use condoms as it was against the church's teaching... given Africa has the highest instance of HIV/AIDS in the world it was not a comment that went down well among those who were trying to educate people in terms of safe sex.

omnishambles · 25/04/2010 18:56

It is being made a big deal of on purpose though isnt it so that the Catholic church can play the victim card and distract other people from the abuse.

It is absolutely terrifying if they really believe that this email is more damaging to their reputation than the abuse. It just shows how truly out of touch they are.

I did wonder if it was a clever PR job.

Make them look like joke rather than the sinister mob that they are.

I laughed. It is like an april fools day joke.

The pope should take some of the pointers on board. His stance on condoms is nothing short of evil.

Replied on another thread - it made me chuckle. And the fact that the guy who did it got off lightly too is great!

It bloody well serves Benedict and his cronies right to be laughed at seeing as they've made a mockery of the religion they purport to uphold.

I only hope it doesn't mean that they end up calling off the visit, because I will be very interested to see the reception he receives. Someone on another thread was talking about loads of people planning to dress up as Henry VIII. I might join them!

The pope should be got rid of IMO. He's corrupt.

Funny how noone would admit to laughing at the Mohammad cartoons from Denmark but the Pope, well that's always good for a laugh right...

Religion happens to be important to some people and I find it pretty disrespectful to have the Pope talked about like this.

I thought this was a tolerant country and that people had a right to free religious belief? Oh apart from the Catholics of course who must have the p**s taken out of them at all times
