AIBU?

To be absolutely shocked that...

The Lovely Bones is a 12A certificate. It is the most frightening, intense film I think I have ever seen. It should be a 15. The idea that people are free to bring young children is scary!

YANBU.
I read the book so didn't want to see the film because I thought it would be quite heavy going. Quite honestly there are many films I think shouldn't be a 12A because some people are idiots and take their very young children to see films which are just not appropriate.

I agree. DD wanted to go and see it with her friends, but I have read the book, and I told her what it is about and she has agreed that she wouldn't want to see it. Thank goodness.

I've never come across any before, I think I'm more inclined to think some 12As should be PGs but this shocked me. I didn't realise it was only 12A till I bought the tickets online which made me wonder if it would have had the life sucked out of it to make it palatable. But no, it was very, very intense. I think just the theme of it should have made it a 15 nevermind the content of the actual film.

I don't know. It's very hard to explain. I thought it was very, very good. Very intense, I feel like I didn't blink for the whole film. The critics didn't like it so I suspect it's a marmite kind of a film. I would definitely make time to go see it.

It is narrated by susie and you see the events leading up to and following her rape and murder. I think I felt the whole thing rather than watched it so I can't really explain the film.

It's about a young girl who is molested and murdered by a neighbour and then watches over her family after she has died. It's all about how they cope.

I hope ex has the boys this weekend then I can go! By the sounds of it 12 is a bit young.

You shouldn't complain about the 12A certificate because some people take very young children. That's their fault, not the certification board. You'd complain more if your sensible 10 or 11 yr old was unable to see a perfeclty appropriate film because it was a 12 (not A) and even more if they upgraded it to a 15 so your 13 or 14 yr old couldn't go.

I'm complaining because I think the film is not appropriate for children under 15 and shouldn't be certificated as suitable for children over 12 without adult supervision or able to be viewed by children younger than 12 with adult supervision. I'm not sure what you mean Trillian? I'm not talking about upgrading any films or very young children seeing it. My OP said that I felt it should be a 15. If the film board felt it was a 12 rated film why did they need to allow young children to view it by making it a 12A? This is my second issue with the decision, there's no need for it to be a 12A and clearly young children should not be able to be taken to it so why 12 rather than 12? I'd be most worried about those 12-15 year olds though that were able to see it with or without an adult not realising what it is about and thinking they are sfe with a 12A.

hmm, i had heard they made it lighter than the dark book, in order to appeal more broadly.
i wouldnt see it though since the critics have panned it

Ah, I thought you were complaining that "people are free to bring young children" and therefore complaining about the A part of the 12A rather than the 12 part.

AFAIK everything is a 12A now, no new films are certified as just 12.

YANBU - there's no way I'd let my dd or ds watch this film - ever - and they are 12.

It is much too harrowing.
