I agree, but it seems to have been suborned by the NF/BNP, and I'm afraid that if I see the flag that's what I assume, not that someone's flying the flag for Jolly Old England.

It's today!

DS is in a Scout parade for it on Sunday. They were having a special assembly at his school today (as they did for St Patricks day, St David's day, etc).

St George was Turkish, apparently. How does he become the patron st of Engalnd? Genuine question.

We are having a St Georges Day supper after Mass this evening. £5 a ticket to include Sausages, mash, onion gravy, peas and sweetcorn, and a glass of wine or beer.

Bargain.

It would be nice if it was a holiday.

The trouble is there are quite a few holidays in the spring.

Shame it's not in October or November. We could do with a holiday then.

It would just end up as an opportunity for the supermarkets to peddle lots of red and white 'England' tat.

I don't even know when it is (oh the shame...)
Is it today then?

What should we do though? How about a penata dragon that the dc spear? And the dp get seriously sloshed and sing out of key (oh no wait we all do that all the time anyway)

So what do you suggest?

DS1 was told, a few years ago, that on St George's Day he was entitled to wear cub uniform at school. He was told this by cub leader so I was a bit about letting him go to school dressed in cub uniform.

We compromised with him dressing in cub kit, and me taking school uniform to school in case the school said "no". I went to check in the office and had a word with the headteacher - she said that she and another teacher has only recently been discussing the "tradition" of cub//brownie/scout etc uniform on St George's Day - so he was more than welcome to be dressed as he was! I had certainly never heard of this before, not sure where the tradition comes from - but it was a nice touch, and other children also turned in their uniforms.

We have moved house now, and DS1 no longer in cubs (or scouts) now - DS2 is though, but did not think to investigate whether he could wear cub uniform.

Anyone else have any experience of this?

He's also the patron saint of Ethiopia, Romania and a load of other places (Heard it on radio 2 this morning) I'm not quite sure what he actually did though ? Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland which made him acool guy. And George supposedly killed a dragon - yeah right!

Patrick chased out the snakes - chased out the pagans, made the place Christian.

George slew the dragon - killed the pagans, made the place Christian.

Same thing, why accept one analogy and not the other?

St george is apparently the Patron Saint of Scouting! Wiki link here

DD took part in a Brownie/scout/guide parade through a local town on Sunday and did the reading in church (very well, I might add) so I think it depends on the individual.

Her school will probably mention it in assembly, but DS' won't.

Saint George - dragons are REAL ? [shocked smilie]

I don't celebrate it because I have no experience of it being celebrated. We never bothered with it when I was a child and I didn't know anyone else who did. So there's no tradition to it for me, but there is with Easter and Christmas.

If someone invents something interesting to do on that day, such as eating little chocolate dragons, then I may be convinced.
