for making vomiting noises over the meal I've just made them?

I was astounded that they could be so rude. Their dad, my brother, didn't say anything apart from that they're fussy eaters.

They were amazed when I told them not to be so bl**dy rude. It was beef stew and rice. Then the next meal was fish fingers, sweet potato mash and steamed carrots as I couldn't be bothered to do anything else for them. The vomiting noises came out again.

YANBU.

I would have told them that behaior was rude and impolite and that they would be asked to leave the table and do without if they didn't know how to behave appropriately at the table. I would have expected their father to back you up too.

Was their father there when they were doing it? He should have told them off if he was but no, YANBU, I'd do the same.

Their dad was there. He just said that they are fussy eaters. They eat practically nothing anyway. He obviously didn't want to make a big deal of the eating issue. Perhaps it's a sensitive area for them?

I did not make another meal after they rejected the beef stew. The fish fingers were the next day's meal.

I feel for my mum. She makes a Christmas Eve buffet spread most years and it's cold hams, vol au vents (I love vol au vents), lovely breads etc and my niece in particular has been rude about it for the last couple of years.

I simply don't remember making such a fuss about food when I was a kid. I wolfed down everything I could get. Perhaps that's a result of growing up with four older hungry brothers!

YANBU - I'd have knocked their heads together - shame on your brother too- grrr

Fussy eaters is one thing, vomiting noises something totally different. I have no problem with children who keep quiet and just don't eat much, but I will pick up on any rudeness around my dinner table.

'bloody' isnt swearing-its allowed on tv before 9pm!

YANBU-even if they are spoilt brats fussy eaters,at least have the manners to try the food then leave it quietly if they dont like it.

How rude! Good for you!

They would have been told to leave the table immediately at my home, with nothing else to eat. Then I would expect an apology and a comprehensive explanation from brother as to why he allowed his children to be so rude. YANBU, your home, your rules apply. If they had issues with food, he should have let you know in advance. I realise you were shocked at the time, but swearing at the kids wasn't really helpful, so that bit was unreasonable.

Blimey, that's incredibly rude. Fussy eaters or no, it shows a total lack of respect for you. You can be a fussy eater and be much more polite about it.

DS2 is very fussy, but he has a choice, to eat it, or not (and he's only just 5). If he was rude like that about anything I or anyone else cooked for him he'd be severely dealt with

Agree with your brother if he has a policy of not making a fuss, but he absolutely should not have allowed them to be rude.

It was wrong to swear though, especially when making a point about manners. (and I don't care what the BBC think, bloody is swearing. There are lots of things in the soaps that shouldn't be on before 9pm imo)

YANBU, If they don't have a responsible adult at hand to tell them that it's rude then why shouldn't you?? I think we're a bit crazy in the UK that we're so frightened of telling other people's children off. Let's face it if they were doing their job, we wouldn't need to.
As for bloody, not nice but I'm sure 5 minutes in the playground and you'd hear much worse!

whatdayisit · 11/06/2008 12:42

Exactly twelvelegs, but that's why someone trying to teach manners should set a better example.

Shockingly rude, but I wonder whether I would have actually blamed them - or their parents. Not for the fussy eating - that's such a difficult one - but for letting vomiting noises happen, AT ALL. If I'd been your brother I'd have marched them out on the spot, in complete horror.

If they're growing up in a situation where vomiting noises are in any way allowed to happen, then there isn't much you can expect of them in the way of manners, I think.
