AIBU?

in thinking that Radio 1 should NOT be playing songs that contain lyrics about shooting and gun noises?

Especially since Gun and Knife crime is increasing.

I leave the radio on for ds1 when he goes to bed and I turn it off when he is asleep.
At the weekend I went up to turn the radio off as usual and they were playing some kind of rap stuff with a load of gun noises on.

Now is it just me or this not a good thing?
Bearing in mind that this kind of music attracts alot of young listeners and it was only about 9:30pm.
I'm not saying this kind of music goes and actually makes someone kill another person but making songs about that kind of thing isnt particularly clever either IMO.

Thats my general bug bear/musing/thoughts for the last few days.

I guess the radio bosses think it's ok to play rap music at 9.30 because most dcs are in bed asleep by then.

Same as the television watershed isn't it?

9.30 pm is most definitely a reasonable time to be playing adult themed music imho.

Ok then, time aside, do you still think it should be being played at all?

No, I don't

Can you not get a 3cd changer and err censor his music?

I wasnt bothered about ds hearing it as he's only 22 months and he'l listen to anything.

That wasnt really the problem.
Its the fact that they play it at all.

The thing with rap music is that it's generally offensive anyway, homophobic, woman hating, glamorising guns, etc etc.

I think you are being unreasonable. Surely if you don't like it you don't have to listen to it?

Put your Barry Manilow CD's on instead

"do you still think it should be being played at all?"

yes of course. i believe that the laws which govern our european ideas of free speech should apply to music. so of course a song which incites violence against a person or a specific crime should not be tolerated, but songs discussing crime (99% of the time fictional) should simply be subjected to the same censoring laws as tv and film. hence "radio-friendly" versions of songs which are played during the day (or if the specific radio station wishes at all times).
what i don't understand is parents (not you leaving a radio on,i'm talking more in the wider scheme) who will happily monitor the movies or tv their children are subjected to and won't let a 12 year old watch an 18 cert. but seem to think that stopping them from owning computer games or cd's which are not age appropriate is an impossible task because all their friends are doing it.

If you think rap songs about guns and hos should be banned, then you should also argue the same for most of the back catalogues of Johnny Cash ("I shot a man in Reno / Just to watch him die"), Nick Cave and countless others. As well as large chunks of the Anglo-Irish-American folk traditions. Historically, songs by white people about killing and misogyny, the main audience for which has been white, have been accepted; songs by black people about killing and misogyny, whose core audience has been black, have been regarded as dangerous. Now, why would that be?

Most music has something in it that will offend someone.

just out of interest do you feel the same about violent movies?should they not be shown on tv at any time?

out of interest why do you choose radio 1 for him to listen to? Classic fm is good for falling asleep to. Or, if thats too slow and he likes the more lively stuff, what about smooth fm or radio 2? My son is 9 and still falls asleep to classic cds, always has done snce he outgrew the nursery ones.

You know what AllFallDown, now that you've mentioned it, about white people and black people, it does seem strange. I'd like to know the answer to that too.

Meanwhile, here's a little something to offend women everywhere.

You'd end up banning a lot of music, wouldn't you? The French national anthem for a start. Lots of operas. Medieval ballads. A mass of English and American folk song. And a whole lot of more modern blues, rock, pop.

What about a silver hammer btw? is that ok? makes less noise- but involves murder of a teacher. Come to think of it I heard Abba in a shop the other day- kissing teachers isn't what we want dc's to learn either, is it?

I am sure there are lots of reasons for objecting to rap, but objecting is what parents do, that's not necessarily enough for the censor. I object to all sorts of things and keep them away from dc's but don't necessarily want them all censored for other people.

If Police's 'don't stand so close to me' were released now, can you see that being played on radio 1?

I am of the belief that they spin the platters that matter for the pop kids..

(I baulked at the term "hot waxing")

Get over your self. Radio 1, has always supposed to be a chanel for young people, a chanel which plays POPULAR music for young people. This society is very much a Nannie state as it is, without sensoring our Pop music too.

Music is a reflection of the times not a guiding force.

If you are worried about gun crime censoring music and literature and other expression is not very effective. So in short. yabu.
