hi i was just sitting here thinking that these commonwealth games are not much more than the home nation,s competing against each other and are giving the athletes the impression they are world class .i mean no america in athletics .no america /russia in gymnastics .sorry but i think its not been great .and i am scottish .and we should not be having a rebel song masking as a national anthem .great song at new year but not on when english competetor standing beside them .

You do know God Save the Queen contains the line "Rebellious Scots to crush"? Grin

I'm sure the athletes have noticed that the Americans and Russians are absent.

I think it's great

Not least for the different types of bodies shown, particularly women. In watching normal tv or reading magazines we don't see any athletic bodies at all, usually just very thin.

I like the counterpoint.

Yes yabu unless you are a world class athlete yourself....
It's a great games and I have enjoyed watching it.
Great for those sportsmen and women who are bloody brilliant but not necessarily Olympic class.

God save the queen is a racist song so
I refuse to have that as my anthem. Flower of Scotland is not a 'rebel song' it's a story. The English army decided in a quiet stealth attack so removed their boots, they stood on thistles (flower of Scotland) and the cries of pain from stepping barefoot on the thorns woke up the sleeping scots who defended themselves. It's about Scotland overcoming adversity. Why do England not have a national anthem? They have to use the British one.

I'm in Glasgow it's been amazing.

I'd rather have Flower of Scotland than Jerusalem - And did those feet? No they didn't! Was Jerusalem builded (it's BUILT!!) here - no, it wasn't!

We've watched it, gone to community events, dc were at stuff yesterday.

Commonwealth Games were never going to be the Olympics. Why would they? But it's been awesome to be in Glasgow while it's been going on!

Oh and flower is a fab song for us. Maybe a little controversial for the englanders but hey they started it! Grin

But they are world class. You could say the same about any sport's Continental championships (European Championships, African Nations etc.)
We don't have to wait for Russia/USA to come out with with their ball.

Scottish swimming has been unbelievably good.

The Commonwealth games have been shown on the BBC although I've not seen them. I have heard bits about them on GMB in the mornings, England are at the top of the leader board for medals or they were this morning.

What about the new world records that have been set?

How can you say that doesn't make them world class?

Report
Pobblewhohasnotoes · 01/08/2014 17:58

Why would Russia be in it?

Am I missing a point here?

Kenyan and Jamaican runners dominate at all running events, including the Olympics. They are at the Commonwealth Games, ditto Australian swimmers. Plenty of Olympic standard athletes across all events. I think the Games have been fabulous for Glasgow, Scotland and Britain. Isn't it fantastic to showcase another part of Britain to the world?

These are world class athletes, even if other world class athletes are absent. Take Lewis Something, for example: silver medal in the Olympics (that world class enough for you?), but bronze medal in the Commonweatlh Games.

If Scotland is competing as a separate country to England, then GSTQ is inappropriate for either (ditto for Wales and NI, of course).

But TBH I do not get why or how the GB is participating as 4 different countries. Scotland is not devolved. The Scottish athletes hold British passports. If I was from one of the other Commonwealth countries I think I would see this as cheating: a way of allowing Great Britain to field more athletes and have a greater chance of winning more medals than the other countris.

I live in West Lothian and have been lucky enough to go to various events. Its been brill! I agree with Weegiemum, there's such a buzz. Really great to take the kids to, too. They've done lots on it at school up here and are quite excited. I think Glasgow should be very proud of itself (and I am English!)
