AIBU to have fell about laughing at DDs carefully constructed outfit?!

A light hearted one...

DD3 is 14 and was going to meet some of her friends from dancing for pizza last night. This clearly required lots of thought, so she disappeared to her room to primp for a couple of hours.

When she came down, she'd carefully chosen a tiny white lacy dress and tan wedges with a clutch bag. Her make up had clearly taken some time due to the amount of eyeliner and mascara that had been applied . But she'd topped it off with a massive scrunchie perched right on top of her head, holding 2 or 3 strands of hair with the rest down!!!

DH rather confusedly said 'what on earth is on your head?' and I'm afraid I snorted with laughter.

DD of course stomped about saying we didn't understand fashion and were bad parents whose laughter may damage her self esteem.

So go on. Are scrunchies back in fashion? I remember wearing them back in the day (dinosaur!) with jeans or shorts, but they weren't paired with dresses!! And WIBU to laugh?

Definitely don't laugh, egos are fragile at that age

Focus on one thing and complement it. Even with multiple piercings, goth makeup I say something nice to dd.

And look disinterested in the extremes, it makes them stop quicker if they think you're not bothered

yabu to snort with laughter , that just gets their back up and dig their heels in , so she might wear her hair like that just to spite you for the next few months no matter how silly it looks :)

yesyouare - if she wears it like that for months, it's not the worst thing to happen. All the more entertainment for me, although I will try to hide the laughter!

Namechange - she gets lots of compliments from us, don't worry! I may be biased but she is a beautiful child, and she's pretty self confident. My only criticism usually is getting her to put more bloody clothes on!

Oh bless her. I'm afraid I think ywbvu. My mum did pretty much the same thing to me, and it pretty much destroyed my fashion confidence. I've been a jeans and t shirt person ever since.

Unless it's inappropriate dress- evening dress for go ape, cleavage for visiting church, I wouldn't comment. Mine are much younger, but all I ever say is "I like your outfit" when I can see they've made an effort. My mum is horrified and regularly tries to make them get changed when they're particularly gaudy. I'd rather they tried out different looks than conform to whatever teenage uniform is current.

The other day I saw a woman on the bus wearing a burgundy velvet scrunchy with diamonte on it, it was the scrunchiest scrunchy I'd ever seen, iyswim. I guess they're back.

I think ywbu and a bit mean to snort with laughter at her. Can you imagine if you had done yourself up and thought you looked nice then came downstairs to comments like that? I'm not surprised she stomped about.

Laughing at her is not a good idea at that age when she is developing her self esteem for life IMO.

GraduallyGoneInsane yes it is entertaining , i try not to let them know if anything irritates me now , shorts with arse hanging out , fishnets with massive holes , loads of black eyeliner , i just let them get on with it now and take a few pics so i can have a laugh with their own kids one day .

I'd have turned it round and made out I was snorting with laughter at her hopelessly out of touch dad, followed up with some witty alright grandad type of remark.

I will have honed this better by the time my dd's are that age (more than 10 yrs to practice )

Scrunchies are awful. But I have a lot of hair and I have to do something with it and a scrunchie would at least look better than those stretchy bands. Maybe depends on the scrunchy.

You were a bit cruel to laugh at her but on the other hand treat them mean and they'll develop a backbone is how I look at it!

I wouldn't have laughed either - I can remember some of my outfits at 14, and didn't I think I looked the dogs danglies ....... A particular white and burgundy batwinged sweater springs to mind . ....

Nothing wrong with scrunchies, they are incredibly useful. Don't tangle and hide all the messy bits on a bun.

If your DD does gymnastics, they often wear them and you stop noticing.

And I always use one for swimming, way easier to get out than elastic.

I think it depends on the relationship you usually have with her, my dad could always be relied upon to make a hilarious joke about my 'belt' and 'had I forgot to put my skirt on' when I came down in my micro-mini. Some families thrive on this kind of banter, for others, laughing might be very upsetting. My kids shouted 'OMG, you can't wear that to a wedding, no, no, no' last week when I was trying on one of my outfits. I then demonstrated the dancing I would be doing on the night, just to ramp up the embarrassing-meter. It was quite effective (but I get it's different for kids to laugh at their parents rather than the other way round).
