AIBU?

....to wonder if I could be pregnant with a Mirena fitted?

Ds is 21 months old, I had Mirena fitted at my six-week check after he was born.
I've got on with it fine - no side effects, no periods bar some light spotting during the first couple of months.

However, for the last couple of weeks I've felt pg. I've gained weight, I've felt flutters, I've been really tired.

My rational side says I've just eaten too much and it's gas. My irrational side says I could be pregnant.

Is there anyone else out there who has become pg on Mirena? A Google search has brought up a Nethuns thread with no sensible advice on it.

And yes, I know I should just POAS but I'm nervous as there's no way I could keep this baby, if indeed it is a baby (new job, no mat leave entitlement, no money, tiny house...etc)

I've felt the same a number of times, have had Mirena for 10 years now - always negative and always felt better for POAS.

Thing is, if you are you need to see your GP as soon as you can - don't endanger your health.

The only way is to poas, if it's negitive then retest in a week.

I doubt you are pregnant.

The Mirena emits a hormone which is a contraceptive. And the presence of the coil within the uterus prevents a fertilised egg being implanted into the lining of the womb. You are not pregnant.

It's possible, but highly unlikely. I've gotten "flutters" after having DD, and it's just gas. Also, you might not get your period, but your body is still going to go through hormone cycles where you feel "off" for a bit each month. So it could be that.

POAS, you'll feel better and if you are pregnant you'll know for sure and you can start planning what you want to do.

My friend fell pregnant with Mirena.....

I often have symptoms with mine but always negative POAS, you're not gonna know unless you do it I'm afraid!

As far as I know you can only become pg if it falls out? Can you feel the strings?

The Mirena has a failure rate of 1 in 200. The only way you'll know if you're pregnant or not is to do a pregnancy test.

POAS... I do every month with my mirena because every bloody month, I convince myself that I am.

Yes, I got pregnant with the Mirena coil. I did miscarry at ten weeks but usually pregnancies with the Mirena go to full-term.

I found out from a GP pregnancy blood test.

I've gone back to the pill now as I was advised against the Mirena, but it wasn't ever really explained.

PS It had not fallen out

People have fallen pregnant on it. Some it fell out, some it hadn't.

If you have "flutters" that implies quite a well gone fetus, pee on a stick.

Otherwise, pee on a stick and again in 2 weeks and if there is nothing you are fine.

If you mirena strings are still insitu and it's been in all that time it's extremely unlikely you will be pregnant. The reason that you bleed so little with mirena is that your uterine lining does not build up enough to sustain a pregnancy. The lack of uterine lining and associated hormones suppresses ovulation plus the presence of the coil thickens cervical mucus preventing the sperm from effectively swimming. The vast majority of women who get pregnant on mirena get caught before it is inserted or it's fallen out and have not realised usually in the first 4-6 weeks. The weight gain is related to mirena although the literature says otherwise. The flutters are probably wind or wishfully thinking. But if you are truly anxious you should do a test.

It is highly unlikely you would get pregnant with Mirena, but coils do have a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy, so you should really get on and POAS to reassure yourself. Don't wait it out.

Thanks all. Going to POAS tomorrow. I can't feel the strings, but then they were trimmed anyway due to discomfort, so that could be why.

Hoping I'm just chubby and gassy rather than anything else.

Have you poas yet? Good luck. Xxx

I felt the same after a few months of having my Mirena fitted but I wasn't pg.

No contraception is 100% safe but the chances of you being pg are really tiny. If you aren't having proper periods then it's really very unlikely that your uterus lining is capable of sustaining a pregnancy.

I would POAS though, just to set your mind at rest.

This is why I can not wait to have mine removed ! I feel like im in the first trimester of pg most of the time. For the past 3 years ive had; tenders boobs, nausea, tiredness and a few poinds weight gain around period, I also get 'coil boils' painful spots on my back/bum and chin. In the early years I often thought I was pg and poas many times.

Make sure you do a test. Someone I know fell pregnant whilst having a Mirena fitted and it had become dislodged and was sideways inside her womb, the pregnancy had a lot of problems because of it (though she had a perfectly healthy child, they are now 3 years old).

Not trying to scare you , but the sooner you know, the sooner you can get help if there are any potential problems. Good luck x
