Well on Mondays our gps run a first come first see type thing which I must add has been a disaster

Well baby started running a fever 38.7 and we could not force it down with cal pol or any nursey tricks my husband had

So went to GP it was about 10 and I didn't get seen till 12 yes 12 but their was a women really kicking off about the wait however it became clear she only wanted to see a female doctor it's her right to do that but she should expect to wait as their were only 2 women doctors on and we have a super gps so you can imagine there was about 100 people waiting

She was shouting about how ill she was yada yada and how hot it was

And I quietly thought you really have two options see the first doctor who is free or shut up and wait she actually would have been see with in the first hour if she did not want a female doctor only

And if your really that ill you will pretty much see any one with medical training if your desperateshe ducks for cover

Everyone has not , not well and fed up AIBU

She can't have been that Ill or she would have been happy to see a Dr, not just a female one.

I disagree generally with a first come, first served system for a GP.

However, I think you do need to have a bit of compassion - lots of people prefer to see a female doctor for various reasons, including if they have been victims of abuse or assault. Many people just don't feel comfortable seeing a male GP, and they are well within their rights to request a female GP.

Obviously shouting is not really on, but it's not your place to judge whether she should see just anyone.

YANBU. Obviously people have their reasons for wanting to see a female GP, but she should expect to wait until said female GP has seen the other patients who were ahead of her in the queue.

Sometimes male doctors are not happy seeing patients about "women's problems" so they make you re-book with a female GP.

Not saying that was the case, necessarily, but I'd hate to be sent away by a male GP because of this.

Jane I agree I think it should be based on clinical need

And I think if you want to see a woman it's your right however if there is not a female doctor on until later or their busy you have to wait

I agree with you that she should expect a bit of a wait and not be rude.

I disagree completely with this bit-And if your really that ill you will pretty much see any one with medical training if your desperate as you have no idea what her reasons for wanting to see a female doctor were.

Why did you need to see the dr? How long had you baby had a hight temp for? You know that a temp is a normal reaction to an infection, we dont actually have a secret magic weapon to bring temp down nor is it always necessary.

Mac doodle I am adopter and have not yet got my adoption order so my child is technically under the care of ss so I have to take her to the doctor with any illness

Because if it wasn't a simple infection and I had not taken her to the doctor I would risk her being REMOVED

And not be allowed to counting with the adoption when we were fostering I couldn't even give calpol with out it being prescribed

That is ridiculous. And just an absurd example of the kind of stuff GP's are expected to take responsibility for and cover for.
Not blaming you, as if that is what you have told to then I understand, but its crazy. GP's and patients stuck in the middle of a system that is just bonkers.

What if it is an intimate problem
that needs seeing quite urgently but she has been a victim of sexual assault. There needs to be help for people like this.

If you want to see a certain doctor (male or female) then I do think you have to accept there may be a wait.

I personally don't like first come, first served - our GP did away with it years ago! It just causes big queues and arguments.

There are lots of reasons why someone might want a female GP though.

What if there were no female doctors though? Hmm. We have 2 male and 3 female partners, but because of how we all work, there may be some mornings or afternoons, with both male doctors and no females (likewise the other way). Should we rearrange our complicated rota to ensure always one of each??

thefishwife, I see a little of it, but it does sound horrific, and good luck, I know I can seem very abrasive on here, but I would be very supportive of you in real life.

They are probably trying different ways to manage demand, personally I hate the sit and wait but if their demand exceeds their capacity currently they may have no choice. Feed back to the practice manager.

go with another practice? we have two next door to each other (literally they share a front door) if one does not suit i will not hesitate to use the other!

ive recently gone with a bigger practice it seems to be better than a small at getting the lady doctors in you have more choice and yes sometimes i have to wait to see a lady but i can always ring at 8am and they open up extra appointments for you on the day or you can see the nurse we even had a recent example of ringing at 4pm and getting a phone call back from the duty doctor who saw him by 5pm

there are few occasions i do like a lady doctor for my breasts i prefer a lady and for smear tests i prefer a lady too sometimes people can panic and demand when they really are scared

sounds like the lady was having a bad day x
