I'm just so pissed off with the double standards!

I went into primark and there is a whole wall dedicated to "hide your fat" type underware Shock
and I dont just mean Spanx and the like, there were corset type tops, underware leggings to stop the wobble as you walk, a "no more back fat" vest - I shit you not, that's what it said on the label!! Rows and rows of the same type of fat hiding underware in all different styles and colours.

In comparison the men's underware department consisted of three rails, boxer shorts, briefs, socks and vests Hmm. Its the same in most shops now (although I was pretty shocked and impressed with such a vast range of products of this style)

In summer all over the tv/magazines its advertising how to get a great bikini body, fab abs, summer holiday slim down etc.

Winter its the little black dress diet for the office Xmas party!! -AIMED ONLY AT WOMEN

Aibu to just think FUCK OFF ALREADY?!
I realise this is nothing new BTW. I just had a realisation that things are only gonna get worse and I feel sad that this is the message that my dds are going to get brought up around

YANBU. The idea of equality is a fucking joke.

someonestolemynick · 23/07/2014 20:24

Oh fuck it, I'm breaking the law by being unashamedly fat and fabulous.

There's obviously a market for it. Cake ?

comingintomyown · 23/07/2014 20:26

YANBU

Barbierella · 23/07/2014 20:27

YANBU

MagicMojito · 23/07/2014 20:29

Indeed there is a market for it, that's ok. But at least market towards everybody, not just girls and women!

Things are not getting worse per se. We are getting simply fatter which means there's more call for fat pants and Gok Wan approved scaffolding.

Being slim has always been seen as healthy and attractive.

CaptainTrollolololol · 23/07/2014 20:31

Yanbu. Where's the fat shaming for men?

lifeissweet · 23/07/2014 20:32

It's actually not only a problem with being fat - they make this underwear in small sizes too - in order to 'shape your waist' or 'smooth your tummy' some slim women have tummies too. It's normal. Particularly after having babies.

But no. You are not allowed to be lumpy, let alone actually FAT.

And yes. That is annoying.

MagicMojito · 23/07/2014 20:32

By just marketing to women, they are sending the message that its ok for men to be how they are but if your are a woman you either need to be thin or at the very least appear to be! How fucking offensive is that?!

OP posts:
melissa83 · 23/07/2014 20:33

It works both ways as I have not really encountered many women that love fat men or beer bellys.

runningonwillpower · 23/07/2014 20:34

You are not being unreasonable.

But who exactly is at the root of this insidious message?

I have the horrible feeling that it's women themselves who perpetuate this shit. Every time we buy a stupid fashion magazine and try to emulate 'a look' we perpetuate this nonsense.

mommy2ash · 23/07/2014 20:34

there is a market there obviously for these things. there are plenty of clothes that require shapewear even for women who aren't fat. it just looks better in my opinion in a tight dress to not have your wobbly bits hanging out and the vast majority of women will have wobbly bits somewhere.

men's clothing is a different kettle of fish. tend to be baggy unless you are of the skinny Jean era and vibrant think of any item of men's clothing that would require shapewear.

I think it's a vicious circle. these things are in demand so they are everywhere because they are everywhere women feel more under pressure to use them

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2014 20:37

It's sale and demand

I very rarely see men discussing who wore what at the Oscars/reading fashion magazines or carefully dissecting the images of male movie stars.

If so many women didn't lap all that up, they'd have no-one to sell it to.

weatherall · 23/07/2014 20:37

Yanbu

This hatred of women's bodies is part of the wider hatred of women under patriarchy.

Women's bodies are naturally 'fatter' than men's therefore hatred of fat is thinly Grin disguised hatred of all that is female.

TurboWithAKick · 23/07/2014 20:38

Bit of an over reaction...

magpiegin · 23/07/2014 20:41

It's supply and demand. If there was a market for spanx for men they would have it in stock. People are getting fatter and lots of people want to look less fat. I am a size 10 and have spanx so I look better in some clothes.

CoffeeTea103 · 23/07/2014 20:43

Yabu.

Deverethemuzzler · 23/07/2014 20:49

Look at how beloved Gok is.
He has a show called love yourself naked or something yet spends the entire show binding women into the sort of foundation garments we haven't seen since the 50s.

And women LOVE him.

Him, a man, calling middle aged women girls and telling them what to wear.

have you seen the clothes he is flogging in sainsburys? They are hideous, not just because the fabric and styles are crap but because they have so much scaffolding you can barely lift them.

I thought his stuff would last one season max but he either has a watertight contract or someone is buying this stuff.

They sell those spanx etc in small sizes too. So like a PP has said, its not just about being fat, its about being perfect.

Not even that old chestnut 'its not that I am anti fat people, its a health issue innit?', because if you are just telling women to hide their fat you don't give a toss if they are healthy or not.

FunLovinBunster · 23/07/2014 20:51

Of course women shouldn't be allowed to get fat.
Given that they're not allowed to get old either. We mustn't be grey. Or wrinkly.
Of course it's fine for men to put on weight. And show signs of ageing.
YABVVVU. Obviously.

FaFoutis · 23/07/2014 20:52

YANBU

It is a fucking terrible state of affairs.

FunLovinBunster · 23/07/2014 20:53

The fashion industry is run by gay men and anorexics. Why should anyone be surprised that they only use tall boyish figured women to model their overpriced clothes?

FunLovinBunster · 23/07/2014 20:55

I'm short pudgy with grey hair. I don't give a shiny shite what crap Grazia Vogue etc peddle.

YANBU it's awful

VampireSquid · 23/07/2014 20:56

I hate the hide your fat. Either lose weight (good for your health, so the preferred option) or don't, but why hide it? It means nothing. You shouldn't be judged for being fat- I lost weight not because I wanted to be conventionally attractive, but because of health. How you look SHOULD NOT MATTER! I don't like how some people look but honestly, it's none of my business. Losing weight or being slim shouldn't be about how you look.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 23/07/2014 20:58

Women are never allowed to be happy with their bodies. Media will be slating someone for being fat one week and too skinny the next.

I also think, "fuck off already" and ignore the whole steaming pile of shite. I only hope that I can get my DD to do the same thing.
