AIBU to think AIBU has morphed into 'let's call troll'?

It certainly has it's own script.

I'm usually too scared to comment let alone start a thread.

Yes but also, there are a lot of trolls.

Quite agree. There's a thread at the mo where one of the parties has behaved in a slightly implausible manner and it's being flagrantly troll hunted despite the fact that it's 100% harmless. No sob stories, nothing upsetting, nothing offensive, discriminatory, hairy handed or liable to set people at each other's throats - it's raising interesting (slightly heated) debate about people's different attitudes.

What the hell is gained by troll hunting on a thread like that? Damaging trolls, sure, I'll bring the picnic for the hunting trip and load your rifle for you. But if it's just an implausible story why would you risk the wrath of MNHQ?

YANBU. It's pissy and unnecessary. If you think someone is a troll, flag their post to MNet Towers and don't feed it by posting on the thread. Calling "troll" does not make you fucking clever - frequently, you come across as an insufferable know-it-all and/or a dickhead.

I also hate those that track the OP's posting history and then decide to use that to attack them/diminish whatever they're saying. This too makes you come across as an insufferable know-it-all and/or a dickhead.

I also hate those who decide that an OP who appears to be posting for the first time must be a troll. Whoopee doo if you have managed to be on MNet and used the same nickname since your first day. There is nothing wrong with namechanging - and no, they should not need to justify their credentials to you by confirming their previous names (quite like the relative anonymity on MNet - if it didn't have that, most people would refuse to post anything, making for a rather boring and inuseful site) or referring to old threads to show that they have been using the site since time immemorial (the brown pouffe, penis-beaker, the fucking parrot with a dick the size of Mount Everest ... ok, totally made the last one up, but YSWIM!)

Just to make it clear, being an insufferable know-it-all and a dickhead are not mutually exclusive.

But I also agree that there's a lot of trolls, many of whom need hunting.

Yes, often unnecessarily imo.

Sure none of us know who anyone really is online, but calling troll on people who may be in bad situations is not being nice.

Some people like to call someone a troll just because they don't agree with them too.

Damn - I knew the sarcasm wouldn't come across! Grin

I was kidding. The 'ooh interesting first post' always comes up as a good old troll huntery post.

Last time I try to be funny! Wink

Pfft.

It doesn't happen that much.

I sometimes struggle to behave myself though. It is the same impulse I get when I see interesting things in skips.

I don't see what the big deal is about making up a story online. I wasn't aware everyone had to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth online. As long as it isn't hurting anyone, who cares?

If the person making up a story wants the attention that badly, then maybe they need it. At least they know they're lying.

Troll hunters are attention whores in denial. If they didn't want as much attention as the OP, they'd quietly report.

I get really irritated when people post something that is obviously an outright lie exaggerated because they have an agenda:

"This is not a benefits bashing thread but AIBU to be upset that my benefit fiddling neighbour can take 5 childnre on holiday and I can't?"

"I'm not having a go at SAHM/WOHM but my friend who is a WOHM/SAHM said I was an irresponsible cow for being/not being a SAHM/WOHM"

"A young/old person made this literally unbelieveable comment to me. WIBU to pointout they were wrong?"

I have absolutely no problem with posts that will only cause a bunfight being scrutinised - especially when the OP is disingenuous and pretends that is absolutly not how they intended the thread to go. JUST SAY WHAT YOU MEAN!

Other than that, I'm on the bridge fence Grin
