To wonder what your idea of the holiday companion from hell is?

Just inspired by another thread, but what kind of person do you hate finding yourself on holiday with?

I can't bear the kind of person who wants to frogmarch everyone around to 'interesting places', and think a minute spent relaxing is a minute wasted. I don't want to spend my entire time in Paris up the Eiffel Tower or wandering around the Louvre or catching a train to Versailles. I want to spend some time just 'being' in Paris, wandering aimlessly around, stopping for coffee or wine, people watching, saying 'let's go down here, it looks interesting' etc. Please don't present me with an hour by hour timetable. It's a holiday.

I'd go for my Mother as well. Obsessed with visiting places, can't we just enjoy 'being'. I have other issues with her as well though!

My mil
My nan - we had to walk around Disney land (a few years back ) according to the map where all the smoking points were. Then she got upset she couldn't go on the roller coasters (70s) because she has priviously had a heart attack. Absolute nightmare !

My Father. Always too tired to go anywhere or do anything, which does beg the question as to why he wanted to come in the first place. He never pays for anything either.

the sort of person who thinks a holday is getting pissed all night and sleeping on the beach all day.

And hour by hour itinery plan also sounds as bad on holiday as it would any other day of the year.
But i do like to spend 50% of my time actually seeing named things.

The sort of person who goes to an amazing cultural city and just wants to wander around side streets instead of seeing the sights. Wink

I'm going on a group activity holiday soon, so don't have to worry about being dragged to places I don't want to go, but my worst type of holiday companion is booked on the trip.

She's whiney and negative about everything, it's as if the only way she knows how to make conversation is by trying to get others to join her in a moany bitch fest about someone or something. I feel quite sorry for her, but it's just so emotionally draining and frustrating to be around her for any length of time.

My mum, but only because she worries about everything, can barely walk 200 yds now, insists on doing 'spit washes' on DD (who recoils), doesn't like it too hot but will wear a cardi at 30 degrees, won't eat 'foreign' food (including pizza and pasta although she does eat curry) and gets pissed on one glass of wine.

It's obvious - someone who wants to have a different sort of holiday than you, I tend to fall into the military organisation camp myself, unfortunately you can't always tell before you go.

But if you don't want to do the same stuff agree to separate!

We went on holiday with my holiday companion from hell.

She spent the whole time bollocking her children, trying to get me to bollock my children for doing stuff she didn't like (eg sitting on sand/not putting their crabbing nets in the 'right place' in our tent), nagging me to tidy my own tent up, stressing about sand on feet, etc

Drove me utterly insane and wasn't the nice, calm, chilled out week I hoped for

Also hate going away with someone who wants to spend entire days wandering around the exact same type of department stores, shopping malls that you get at home. Surely the point of going away is to do something different from the normal everyday of home life.

I agree Mothership. I have a friend who I love spending time with at home but wild horses wouldn't drag me on holidays with her. I just know we'd have a busy busy schedule that wouldn't suit me, and she would probably be driven mad by me wanting to wander around, explore the side streets, soak up the atmosphere etc when there's another fabulous cathedral/art gallery/museum we could be going to see.

Anyone who tries to talk to me when I'm sitting in the sun reading. Sadly DH and DDs are persistent offenders.

My mil and her sister. At the beginning of every holiday they establish a kitty. Everything is bought from that kitty, food, drink, entertainment, trips, presses, everything. They spend the entire time working out if they've had their fair share of the kitty. One year on holiday with a group of their grandchildren they insisted that the GC put all their spending money into one kitty, that was fun.

We actually went on holiday with mil once, she mentioned a kitty on the first day, oh how we laughed!

Oh, god, yes, shopping. Unless I'm going to New York or having a little mooch around a pretty little market, I wouldn't go shopping when I'm on holiday. I can do that at home.

My MiL is terrible for this. I live in a tourist place. MiL comes to visit and does she want a wander down the beach and a nice lunch? No, she wants to go to M&S. I think she chooses her holiday destinations based on whether or not there's a M&S

Oh god my holiday from hell was with a very close friend, she had a son similar age to mine - what could go wrong....
Having known each other for years, spent many a pleasant day together we discovered that she is LOUD PARENT from hell and I am 'allow your child to be feral' parent from hell. It was not a good week

PILs. They refuse to plan anything and just say "we'll tag along with you, whatever you want to do is fine." So we all go somewhere and they'll make comments like "I've seen better statues than that at home" or "Hmm, no it's not really my cup of tea," whilst maintaining the most miserable face imaginable.

"OK, if this isn't your cup of tea what do you want to do?"
"Oh we're not bothered really, we'll just fit in with what you want to do."

Never, ever again!!!

Anyone other than my DH & the DC.

I couldn't bear the thought of going away with anyone else, I'd find it really stressful.

I've done a couple of holidays with my parents in tow, but we've done our own thing during the day & met up for dinner in the evenings. Even that is stressful enough!

Yes, hate a holiday where everyone wanders around in one big group; as if they're on a school tour. No one actually gets to do what they want because everyone is so busy compromising -'no honestly, I'm happy to go to the museum' 'No seriously, we don't mind about missing the museum if you really want to go to the beach' 'well how about we all go to the market instead?' 'Yes, that's fine' No one's felt they've pushed their way on anyone and everyone 'happy' to go off and do something they don't really want to do Sad

Anyone who doesn't have children. I don't think I could take the tuts, looks and list of child unfriendly things to do ever again. Who in their right mind thinks it's acceptable to book a 12 hour booze cruise with small children in tow? Yes best friend I'm speaking to you, you absolute clown. Never ever again I'm getting stressed just thinking about it.

The in laws. Done 2 holidays with them, both crap. some offending points:
They don't get out before 2pm
they are control freaks
MIL is a massive hypochondriac and talks 'symtoms' constantly, especially of the bowel variety
most of the holiday is spent looking at views from the car.
They won't pay to park, even if it involves driving round endless side streets for 2 hours.
They won't eat lunch before 2pm and dinner around 10pm. And if 10 year old dsd is hungry before then they huff and puff and make out like she's being a pain.
They love to complain and nit pick over the tiniest things, such as me using too much washing up liquid.

I could go on.
