To feel uncomfortable - additional parking permit

DBIL is in the process of buying a campervan and has said that we can use it whenever we want to. Lovely, except that I dont think well use it a huge amount as we're not great campers (and we've just had a new baby) but great to have the offer there of course.

DBIL came over last night and talk turns to where it will be kept. It transpires that he is looking at keeping it in storage for around four months of the year in storage and then outside our house for the rest of the year (including during summer time).

There are practical reasons why he can't keep it outside his place and he lives about 30 minutes from us.

It's been stressed that he would pay for all the running costs and that we wouldnt have to contribute at all, just petrol etc when we used it. We are in the middle of town so have parking restrictions and so it would need a permit. It was casually thrown in that this would mean that it needed to be registered in our names. If we do that then we have to be the registered owners and then the insurance, MOT, tax etc will all be in our names. I dont really want to do that to be honest if he has an accident in it then while we wont lose our no-claims bonus if I'm right then I think our premiums could be affected?

Also, I just dont want to be responsible for another vehicle and it will be our fault if its not taxed or insured etc. I suspect DBIL is just as disorganised as my DP when it comes to paperwork so yet another thing for me to be responsible for and worry about.

I feel really uncomfortable with it. But I dont know though whether Im being unfair and should just go ahead with it or say no. If we say no then for other reasons I don't want to go into it will be difficult for him to get it and keep it.

Any thoughts?

As camper van is in your name you liable for parking fines, speeding fines etc. also from his point of view it means the van will have an extra owner if ever he needs to sell it on. In fact he couldn't sell it you need to as you 'owe' it. You sure he not giving you a free camper van. I wouldn't let my name get mixed up with something I gave no control on just got parking!

I would not be responsible for it.

What if your dbil forgets to pay the insurance or forgets to pay the tax? If it gets damaged then yes it will affect your insurance.

I think it's actually very selfish to buy something like that and expect you to take responsibility in your name.

How big is it? Do your neighbours want a bloody great big campervan taking up their parking!?

He wants the campervan therefore it's his problem.

If he asks why just state that you don't want any responsibility for it and you aren't likely to use it anyway.

Yes totally forgot about any speeding fines that may occur they'll all be totally your responsibility and can affect your licence too.

c) would you be the main insured and he'd be a main driver?

He's being cheeky. The polite answer is "No, that doesn't work for us". If that doesn't get through, there are less polite versions.

No way would I accept that level of responsibility for someone else's vehicle.

Oh what a carry on. As well as it being fraud, its a recipe for disaster. There are plenty of storage places where he can keep it more securely.

Strangely enough, my DBIL asked a similar thing of me, except he wanted to park in a resident's space while at work, to avoid a 10 minute walk. He clearly thought me most unreasonable to refuse, but since I don't like him, I didn't care. I thought him most unreasonable to ask.

I wouldn't even be considering it, no way.

Legally you would be responsible for it and I wouldn't fancy having a camper can parked outside my house and it's one less space for residents.

Yy the neighbours. You live somewhere that parking permits are required and yet your BIL wants to take up a whole valuable space with a vehicle that never moves.

No way would I be up for this! And then to get an additional parking permit as well, lots more hassle then what it's worth. Why can't he leave it under storage all year around? It would be better for the vehicle that way also.

If you want a get out of jail free card, just say there has been a lot of damage to cars outside your of late.

Thanks for all your replies! I don't think it's going to be a great big campervan - more a VW type of thing.

That's my worry - parking fines, speeding tickets, correspondence with DVLR etc - all of which would fall to me. I do really really like him though and would want to help out if we could. If there was any way of him having the permit without it being in my name I don't think I would mind.

Someone above said it would it be fraud? Is that right? I mean if it's all in my mine but DBIL was, say the beneficial owner (but not the legal owner) then I didn't think that was fraud? I wouldn't be making any frauduldent applications - the van would be in my name (which is of course my point - I don't want it to be!!).

There are no restrcitions in our area for this type of van - falls within what is permitted.

The storage is a few hours away and I guess he wants it closer to him during the summer months when more likely to use it. Storage also costs money I suspect...

No no no, it's fraud. If you aren't the main driver you can't have the insurance in your name, it's called fronting. Regardless of all the other risks, that one isn't worth it.

I'm sure you can have insurance in your name and then have someone else as the "main driver"?
