AIBU?

Circumcision: A Social Status in the UK ?

Amazonia · 25/04/2014 09:06

Curiously in the UK, circumcision is now a matter of social class. While the "ordinary" folks rarely circumcise, circumcision is prevalent in the upper class as well as in the Royal family.

I don't think the upper classes routinely mutilate their babies

Usually I wouldn't bother asking this, but as your OP reads like a thesis statement I will: what is the nature of your AIBU?

How would this be evident? Is it something we have to declare at some point? God, this baby raising is a minefield.

Oh yabu to kick this argument off again.

WTF?

Regrettably I haven't shagged enough toffs to comment.

Daily Telegraph article on the subject. No more to be said, really.

Just wondering if this is likely to show up as a norm in order to situate someone in a specific social class....

Interesting - so now it's not about about saying sofa or settee or lounge or front room or loo or toilet it's about your dick!!!

I don't think any more, hopping. But certainly when my much older brothers were at posh schools, their uncircumcised state caused some amusement among their peers.

Am I being stupid, only been with one cut guy and didn't really notice the inch of skin cut off

Fairylea · 25/04/2014 10:37

Does anyone really care whether their son fits into posh willy circles? Surely it just shows how the upper classes have more money than sense. If it's even true.....

Circumcision should be illegal unless it is entirely for medical reasons.

Nah, I've shagged a lot of people, a reasonable subset of them were toffs, and the only circumcised people I've shagged were American.

While anecdote isn't data, it was a fairly large sample size...

SuzzieScotland : If you didn't notice any difference, maybe he was only mildly cut ?

Prince William didnt look as though he was and i would put him in the upper class bracket.

meditrina · 25/04/2014 11:01

That (old) a telegraph article is about how the practice died out in the 'upper' classes.

It's generational isn't it? It was still commonly carried out in the 1950s, but numbers plummeted since then.

Hoppinggreen : Only guessing>>>All those material stuff, one can buy that. Displaying a circumcised thing, shows that when you were born, your parents got your status stamped on your body and this stamp cannot be erased, no matter what.

Fairylea : Are you urging for a communist world when you say that circumcision should be illegal? But then, some have long foreskins, others have shorter ones... How would you make that uniform?
