AIBU?

to wonder why hairdressers seem to be incapable of blow-drying hair without resorting to straighteners?

And I don't like straighteners.

Why can't they just do a normal blow-dry anymore? It seems that whether you want your hair straight, curly or wavy, the straighteners come out. I feel like the hairdresser is cheating a bit, there used to be skill involved in a blow-dry.

Straighteners damage your hair and I don't want then used on my hair.

The hairdresser asked me at the beginning how I wanted it dried, I said "just a good blow-dry please", she then said "okay then shall I go over it with the straighteners or curl it?" I said "no thank you". Then she did it anyway. Angry

And I know IABU because I didn't tell her to stop. I just sat there, made a face, then didn't leave a tip.

And, they always tug really hard on any knots, it hurts! I need to find a good hairdresser.

Yanbu I also feel it's the shortcut route. I always ask for a blow dry, it lasts longer IMO.

Now I've never come across this.

My hairdresser always blow-drys it even though the style I have it could be achieved easier with straighteners.

The hairdresser before blow-dried straight it and then just smoothed it very briefly with the straighteners

You're right. Very few hairdressers can blow dry any more

Never had any used on me, straightish hair, always uses a round brush.

Never seen them use them on anyone else either...

Mine asks if I want straighteners on or not.. usually it doesn't need it though.

I must be going to the wrong places, I've tried about 8 different hairdressers in the last few years and they ALL do it with straighteners.

I prefer a big round brush blow-dry too, it can last a few days, looks bouncy and healthy and feels like a treat. With straighteners I just think "I could have done this myself".

I have never had straighteners used. You need a new stylist.

Mine doesn't use straighteners, mind you I'm not sure they were invented when he probably did his training!

Okay so who knows a good hairdresser in Glasgow that's not too expensive and doesn't use straighteners?! Smile

The one I went to today was £41, I usually pay £25-30 max, which is why I'm especially pee'd off they cheated with straighteners Sad

Mine always offers to use straighteners and I always say no because it means she takes even longer doing my hair. I have recently been refusing a blow dry too and have been going home with my hair wet because my hairdresser seems intent on incinerating my hair and scalp as she uses such a high heat setting on the hairdryer. On the plus side, it is cheaper to forgo the blow-dry but I feel a bit of a fool travelling home with my hair dripping wet.

She also tugs on knots and don't get me started about those gruesome head massages that feel more like torture. I spend the whole time bracing myself but when she asks whether it was nice and relaxing I always say yes! However, I haven't found a hairdresser that cuts and colours my hair better without charging a fortune so I put up with it.

Mine does a blow dry and uses the straighteners after.

I fucking hate hair straighteners and everything about them.

Last time I went the hairdresser used the bloody things on me - I have a pixie cut which is about 2inches long at the longest Hmm

Haha LilyRose, don't even get me started on the head massage! I got one of those too, but every time she pushed her fingers down into my scalp the sink lowered a notch, until my neck was aching and I had to grab the back of my head for support! She said "oh would you prefer I put the sink up higher?" eh yes please! Put the same thing happened again.

Going out with wet hair, now that's something I've never seen anyone do! Kind of wish I had the guts to do that.

Lots do that I've found. Just makes their lives a bit easier. I found the older the hairdresser, the less likely they are to rely on straighteners.

I almost plucked up the courage to ask her if I could brush it myself when it was wait, but I chickened out.

My hairdresser (wee back street/cheap as chips/shampoo&set type place) does an amazing blow dry. I've been going to her for 20 years, and to her mum before that! I've had every hair cut from pixie to below my shoulders and currently have a chin length bob. She blow drys it beautifully and finishes it v briefly with straighteners especially if it's damp/wet outside as that helps control the frizz/keep the shine!!

My hairdresser always blow dries, she has never used straighteners. I have to say though the last few times I have been I've just had a wash and cut because I found out it costs an extra £11 when she dries it.Shock

Mine does a great straight hair-dry and my hair is at least as thick as two heads worth. Just a little local place and my hairdresser is early twenties.

Fragglerock those are exactly my feelings on them too.

I also think hair looks a bit crap after straights, no 'body' to it, or something.

Although I do actually own a pair! They are 10 years old and they are used to heat my eyelash curlers and to iron collars on blouses two minutes before I sprint out the door for work Grin

BakerStreet I wish I could just ask her to stop doing the head massage but I have been going to her for a couple of years and it would look strange. It is so difficult to find a decent hairdresser as I live in London and even the expensive ones I have been to end up being disappointing.

I tell myself that people probably think that I have been swimming when I go home with wet hair. And I tell my hairdresser that I have stopped using heat on my hair so often to improve its condition. She doesn't seem to mind, to be fair.

I always say no when my hairdresser asks if I want straighteners, since discovering that they charge an extra £5 for the privilege!

It gives me rage when they ask about straighteners. If I wanted a half arsed dry and a straightener finish, i would do it myself for free!

I've recently moved areas and I have contemplated going back to my old amazing stylist .. Oh how me and my hair miss her
