AIBU?

Am I being unreasonable to dislike this response to my status?

Me and my partner have banter about him not clearing up, me being a nag etc. It is only a joke, which I would have thought is pretty standard husband/wife banter.

I put a status today saying 'After waiting six days for the bathroom to be cleaned, I am doing it myself. Men!'

I meant it in jest, and other comments from friends were along the lines of 'i wouldnt trust my husband to clean the bathroom' and 'they do it on purpose so we don't ask them again'. All in a lighthearted manner, with said husbands joining in. My partner did not comment, as his phone is broken so does not have immediate access, although I told him about it, and we were laughing about the comments. He was not annoyed in any way.

A few hours later, I noticed a comment on said status from partners aunty saying 'I dont see my nephew criticising you on facebook. It doesnt make you look good.'

Now I am shocked and a bit annoyed because we were having a joke, and partner was laughing along too. I have always had a distant friendly relationship (she lives far away) with her, with no issues.

I removed her comment and replied to her via inbox, saying sorry she was offended but my comment was in jest and that I think she has found fault were there isn't any. I also sent her a link of a past status of OH's where he had made a joke about me nagging him (which she had actually liked!).

Was I being unreasonable to post this status, or is she being unreasonable?

YABU to conduct your relationship on FB where you are inviting comment. If you want to have banter between yourselves then keep it between yourselves rather than putting it out on the www. for everyone to see.

I'd take her off my fb. She should not have put that on your wall.

So to post a jokey comment on my status about men not cleaning up means that I 'conduct my relationship on facebook'? Bit of a jump there, but thankyou for your opinion.

Yes I realise that some people hate facebook altogether! But I am asking for opinions on a specific situation, not on whether people like facebook in general. Just to clarify, I would say I maybe post one status a week/2weeks.

She was rude, but I can't stand the 'all men are so useless blah blah blah' crap because actually no they're not

She shouldn't have put that comment and you shouldn't have messages her its just turns into a row.

Over-reaction on her part. I wouldn't defriend her, but would adjust my settings so that she couldn't see any future updates/statuses! She'd be none the wiser (although might think you've gone a bit quiet lately and not posting much, lol.)

Anyway, unless you are over seventy isn't that comment a bit old fashioned?

SeaSickSal · 09/02/2014 23:41

I can't stand the 'men are so useless posts'. I have most of my in laws as friends on Facebook, and that does mean I know I have to be careful what I say.

Put it this way, I doubt your mother would be very happy if he was writing on Facebook that you were lazy and slovenly round the house.

I hate the whole "poor little wimmin have to do all the housework because our spoiled princes can't possibly clean their own shit off the toilet" mentality. I would be mortified if I had raised a NT son into adulthood and he did not have the skills required to keep himself clean.

Yeah she did get the wrong end of the stick but that sort of attitude is a massive bugbear of mine.

Yanbu. Some people are overly argumentative on FB.

Finsmum86 · 09/02/2014 23:44

Of course it is an old fashioned comment, but it just happens to be true with my OH, He works very hard, and I love him despite his aversion to housework!, it is a running joke between us. Maybe I shall have to think more carefully about what I say in future. I thought I already did, but maybe not on this occasion.

Yabu purely because I too hate those sorts of comments. Still you seem happy in old fashioned type relationship- would rather pull my eye lashes out!

I think she read it in a different tone to the one you intended. She read
'After waiting six days for the bathroom to be cleaned, I am doing it myself. Men!' Angry

'After waiting six days for the bathroom to be cleaned, I am doing it myself. Men!' Wink

To be fair, it's easy to read something in the wrong tone. Next time I suggest you write.

'After waiting six days for the bathroom to be cleaned, I am doing it myself. Men!' Grin Grin [giggle] Wink Wink [snigger] Grin [Knoworramean Aunty Maureen] Wink [nudge]
