I've come across this on countless threads.

"My cousins best friend is an extremely famous actress."

"I once slept with a very famous football."

"I got a message on Facebook from a well known singer saying I was beautiful and wanted to take me out on a date"

I understand the point of privacy but why not just say who it is, as you are hardly going to get George Clooney coming on MN disputing it.

Is it so people beg to know who it is, or because it's actually bullshit and this "very famous" actor was in actually just in Emmerdale 7 years ago for a couple of months?

I wonder how a football gets to be famous... Wink

Perhaps if it was once kicked by Pele?

My favourite was the sister of a famous musician. She was very sweetly, and very rightly, proud of her brother's success but was trying to conceal who he was.

Several mumsnetters "is it Calvin Harris?"

Um....yes.

I guess for some people it would out them.
For others they don't want people begging for info/gossip/to meet/get autograph.

For me I'll happily admit of the people I've met for whom others might have heard of... I've met Cerrie Burnell (CBeebies) a few times as dd2 is missing her arm.
The other person I knew, I wouldn't ever give their name because the main contact I had with them was when I caught them shoplifting, age about 13. Which is kind of ironic considering what they are best known for. But I wouldn't give their name because that was a long time ago, I know the person they were with was the ring leader, and I don't think it's fair on them to drag it up. They're not really famous, but if I said how you'd know them, I guess quite a few people here would know who I was talking about.

It's very identifying. I've mentioned a few on threads but anyone that knows me would know it was me from the list.

There are loads of journalists on MN - and that's without the professional internet trawlers and investigators.

These posters are protecting themselves and their identity. Sensibly, IMO.

Why do you want to know who they are, anyway?

because it would out them and maybe cos them to be sued by the very famous footballer , there is a mumsnetter on here who has great stories but never mentions names well sometimes she doesI think she used to work in the media or something, but her stories are amazing not seen her in a while though

The Calvin Harris thread was brilliant. His music is not really 'my thing' but I really like him because he seems to have a lovely family Grin

Probably to avoid having their inbox explode with journalists offering them all sorts for their story.

Auntidote · 03/11/2013 16:36

Because they're making it up and know no-one of any interest to anybody (apart from their family & friends)?

I don't understand why you would mention it in the first place if you have no intention of saying who.

He isn't an only child. The last interview i read with him said that he started djing in his room after his brother and sister went to uni. Google the interview in the Independent.
