to think about shopping friend of friend for undeclared income?

Is this really snide of me?

Friend of friend has several cash in hand cleaning jobs. Her three DCs are at school so she takes on as much work as she can while they're there. No idea how much she makes in a week but know she charges clients 10 pounds an hour. She works very hard - is one of these people who never seems to pause, is always buzzing wth nervous energy, working or looking for work.

Recently found out that she also claims tax credits as though she were a SAHM. All of her cleaning work is under the table - no tax paid but also claiming benefits as though she wasn't working.

Her husband has a full time low paid job, and they rent a small house in a wealthy area, in a rural place so they each need to run a car, so I can totally see why they need every penny they can get. But, she's defrauding, isn't she?

It's none of my business, right? Or is it?

Her lookout. She might well get caught, but I wouldn't shop her.

I'd have done it already, the thieving cow.

I daresay you won't have to wait long before she's caught out anyway. If she's doing cleaning jobs, she's advertising somehow. Even if it's word-of-mouth, not every mouth will stay shut will it?

I wouldn't, personally. I know some people would grass up their gran but I couldn't be so two-faced, no matter the principles of the matter. If I felt strongly enough about it I'd end the friendship alongside dobbing her in.

No, it's none of your business and you don't know anything, you just 'think' this or think 'that'. Stones/glasshouses.

KirjavaTheCat · 06/09/2013 22:32

Oh I see, she's not a friend.

Well then it's just rumours then isn't it? How do you know for sure? There was a thread recently about a woman who'd been repeatedly reported for benefit fraud, payments get halted and it can have a devastating effect on a family that are already stretched to the limit.

I would. And I would tell the cheeky bitch she was out of order too.

If everyone paid their fair share of tax, on balance, all tax payers would actually pay less in the first place.

Nobody accepts large organisations are right to use loopholes/off shoring...it's not even a loophole to not declare earnings.

The country is on its arse and turning a blind eye is no longer good enough. It affects everyone else in the grand scheme of things!

Report
Snoopingforsoup · 06/09/2013 22:36

Obvs. If she's not telling you this herself then she may not be earning as much as you think she is.

FatAssPantaloons · 06/09/2013 22:36

I know because we have a mutual friend who was telling me, 'oh X is thinking she'd better start declaring a bit of income so that she gets credited with pension contributions'. And the person themselves has said in my presence about receiving tax credits. So she can't be telling HMRC her true income in regard to tax credits without them realising she's not declared those earnings for tax?

I think I won't shop her. No point spreading misery is there.

I wouldn't.

It isn't people who do a few hours undeclared cleaning work that the taxman needs to be concentrating on.

No i wouldnt. Totally agree with Chipping

Tax credits on the basis of one adult working in household, when two adults are working.

I think shopping someone on the basis of gossip makes you a pretty malicious person.

Seriously we have these threads every week.

Do you want to live in some horrible state dictatorship? Neighbours shopping their neighbours for the good of "the state". Generally not a good thing if you judge by history whatever your ideology.

They are quite obviously relatively poor. She works bloody hard and this is a good thing. It's not her fault that she lives in a country where the benefits/tax system means it doesn't pay to work. I expect her money will be back in the system paying for her family - they are not robbing the state to fund their feckless second life on a yacht somewhere (maybe dob them in if they are).

Leave it.

I wouldn't shop her, sounds like she's working hard and not declaring it to keep her and her family afloat. It's not like she's swimming in cash, off on holidays 4 times a year and splashing out on £4000 handbags is it?

It's christmas soon. just something to think about

Anyway your friend has told you that X is thinking about declaring. Maybe she has now or will soon. I really wouldn't want to be responsible for someone elses misery in that way. She'll probably get caught out in the end, doesn't mean you should bring it about.

I wouldn't. Doesn't exactly sound like she's living it up. She's just a person trying to get by in hard times. She sounds desperate and hard working and not the kind of person who deserves to be shopped and loose everything.

As a previous poster said, it's not people like her we should be worrying about.

It would annoy me too. People working the system, especially if they brag about it, which the mother of one of DD's friends did, to me. I thought about dobbing her in, but didn't.

Karma. It has a funny way of biting people in the bum. She will get caught.

Report
Snoopingforsoup · 06/09/2013 22:53

Oh!

Maybe my household should stop paying the frigging 40% plus tax then too as we all work hard and deserve it?

Tax Credits are not there to be abused by people who don't need them.

The tax man ABSOLUTELY should be focussing on the millions of cash-in-handers, who then abuse the system further by claiming benefits they're not entitled to!

I used to believe in the welfare state but threads like this make me realise it's no longer used as it was intended and it sounds like everyone thinks they're entitled to abuse it!

Disgusting!

It is wrong.

But, it is wrong that people have become so desperate they resort to lying.

I'm sure she's not living in luxury.

If she was a friend of yours would you shop her?

It's none of your business and you've only had hearsay anyway.

So you are guessing

And really can you blame people for taking small cash in hand jobs when things are difficult

She is hardly living the high life, there are people out there not paying hundreds of thousands in tax like certain government advisors they are the ones that you should be concerned about

Report
Vijac · 06/09/2013 22:56

Bit of she isn't working much then she wouldn't pay much tax. Why is it one rule for one and another for everyone else. Cash in hand jobs ARE a massive problem for our country collecting taxes. So many people do it. I never probe cleaners etc and I'm not sure if I would tell but I don't get the justifying that she needs the money.
