Inspired by the HW thread, I have been thinking about this for a while.

Arthur works for the MoM so wont be on a pittance as a head of department, even a minor one as there would surely be grades?

They eat massive amounts of expensive food having three courses at every dinner, cooked breakfast every day. When they win a load of money, instead of saving it in the knowledge that they have 4 kids still at school they blow the lot on a holiday of a month in Egypt! At the beginning of CoS Mrs W takes some silver sickles and ONE gold galleon from their vault, and then happily blows 1000 galleons on a holiday rather than see them financially secure for the next few years.

Seems to me that the reason their kids are in second hand robes and reading second hand books is because they are shit with money, not that they dont have enough.

Books.....They have to have a new Miranda Goshawk book each year, so when F&G have finished with them they could have passed one to Ron who passed it to Ginny and the older ones shared the remainder if they needed it, which is unlikely. Why have several unused copies of the same book in the family and still buy another one for the youngest student? Same with robes. Rons dress robes are second hand, but Mrs W says that Arthur has some for parties so why not lend him those (with some magically performed alternations if needed) rather than pod out for horrible second hand ones? Actually, thinking further, Mrs W is supposed to be a whizz at household stuff so why doesnt she transfigure the second hand stuff to look better?

They just throw good money after bad!

Well they are poor - because they're a bit crap with money. Plus Molly doesn't work and they had 7 children. I don't think Arthur was that important in the MoM so probably wouldn't have been earning the kind of salary that would allow super comfortable living on one income whilst raising 7 children. 5 of whom were at school initially.

I don't understand why Harry gave the Goblet of Fire money to Fred and George to start their shop when the family were struggling - surely as Harry's adoptive family it would have been better for the whole family to benefit rather than letting F&G go off and follow their dreams..

Poor Ron in his seventies frilly dress robes. It cracks me up every time in the film. I was a lot more sympathetic in the books but he looks like Fred West on his wedding day and Rupert Grint (very Harry Potter name that) looks so doleful!

Perhaps the Chamber of Secrets shopping trip camejust before wizard pay day and that's why there was so little in the vault? They are clearly not rolling in it but have enough - Percy gets an owl for being a git becoming a prefect.

the shabby robes have always bothered me too. Even if her magic sewing skills are not as good as the magic cooking and cleaning, she could have at least got rid of the frills.

Also, if it is all done by magic, then why does she look constantly harassed? I get that she has 7 children, but she carts them off to boarding school as soon as they are old enough. During term time do you think she lazes around getting a magic mani/pedi and a touch of Botox?

1. As Hermoine clearly demonstrates in the last book by carrying all the school books round in her magic bag (plus some of dumbeldores) spell books are a life long investment. Especially if you are chasing after evil wizards.

I have also wondered about blowing all that money on a month long holiday - to visit their eldest son because they never get to see him! I mean come on! You're fecking wizards for merlin's sake! Just make a portkey (the spell is portus in case you're wondering Molly and Arthur...) and go, don't blow a shed load of money on it!


I must say I am enjoying all these Harry Potter threads at the moment. I think subconsciously people are missing potterverse. Jo needs to pull her finger out and write a prequel.

Ah yes AndHarry food is one of the five exceptions to Gamp's law of elemental transfiguration. Maybe Molly was summoning it from somewhere she'd made it earlier??
