To be really pissed off at this parking attendant

I parked in a private car park before and was stood at the pay machine ready to buy my ticket, there was a man in an unmarked hi vis vest sort of loitering around but I assumed he was doing building works so took no notice. Another man shouted me over from his car window and gave me his used parking ticket which didn't expire until midnight, for which I was very grateful! I took the ticket, checked that there was no reg plate on it and put it on my windscreen. The hi vis vest man was sort of looking at me at this point, so I smiled, made eye contact and continued sticking the ticket on.

I got out of the car and proceeded to walk out of the car park and as I was almost at the gates the hi vis vest man came running up to me and shouted "the tickets are non transferable you know" I apologised and said I didn't know and it was the first time I'd parked there (it was and tbf there wasn't a sign anywhere saying the tickets weren't transferable).

He then gave me a lecture very smugly about how he "should give me a ticket" and how I "thought I'd got away with it" in an extremely patronising tone, basically making out like I was trying to con him out of money. This royally pissed me off considering he physically saw the whole fucking thing and could have mentioned it any time! I duly apologised and paid. He then said he'd have let me park for a pound if I'd owned up.

I know it's trivial, but AIBU to be seriously pissed off this man has made out I've tried to do him over?

I wish I'd told him to give me the fucking ticket.

He didn't mention it beforehand because he knew he bloke who gave you the ticket would have probably told him to piss off.

I'd have also said "and your parking tickets aren't enforceable, you fucking jobsworth." If he had said anything to me after watching the whole thing.

It says 'non transferable' on the ticket and machine. YWBU.

did you hand him over the money or buy a new ticket? whether he is right or not I would be going to the office in the car park and asking is it normal procedure for their attendants to offer tickets for "a pound?". he was an arse though. I have often given and accepted tickets.

No it didn't say "non transferable" on the ticket machine, I said that in my post

I never thought he might have pocketed it!! Would it be really mean of me to find out the number of the people who own the car park and snitch on him?

So you gave him a pound and kept the mans ticket, you didn't get a new one?

Sounds like he has a little scam on to me. If you were really annoyed I would report him.

depends how much it bugs ye tbh. but he has a scam going. I cant imagine its a big earner though as he has to see someone transferring a ticket.

no she paid full price ticket. he said he would have taken a pound. that's when alarm bells went off for me.

To be fair thought it's common sense that tickets are non transferable otherwise there is a business losing out. You knew it was non transferable.

You said you smiled at him when you got the ticket. Perhaps in his mind that was you patronising him hence his attitude towards you.

I doubt it's a scam but if it is so what? You paid £1 for a days parking. It costs me £2 to park for just an hour.

R u sure he's a parking attendant and not somebody who takes not ready to expire tickets and sells them on cheap!! Men like these are rife in Manchester

Sounds more like you had to pay him as a bribe not to give you a parking ticket. Would be different if you'd bought a new ticket from the machine/office!

I always do this, give my ticket away that is, or accept one if offered it. So I'm on your side.

I think your mistake was - so I smiled, made eye contact, and continued sticking the ticket on - he probably thought you were totally taking the piss and sticking invisible two fingers up at him!

he couldnt' give you a parking ticket as you would have sent the ticket stub in and said look I had a ticket.

As the other poster aid he waited until you were on your own before saying anything, the man would have told him to piss off.

The car bashed all the time, tax, tax and more tax - pay to park pay for petrol pay vat on petrol pay tax on top of the vat on petrol and then pay for emissions each year and then MOT and then for your licence. Insurance which is a rip of as well.

it was pleasant in france with so much free parking everywhere, even camper vans are encouraged to park in towns for free and given free electric so they eat in the town and spend money

And to be honest I've seen so many people do it before I thought it was common practice!

Sure if you can do a ticket swap that's fine but if you get caught then yes own up and pay full price. Don't play innocent. If everyone did it then think how much business they would be losing out on?

It really makes no difference that you paid £8. It's not like the man added extra on - that's the price which is displayed before you enter.

If there was no sign to say tickets are not transferable, and it doesn't say this on the tickets, then no one can give you a ticket for using a transferred ticket, because all fines have to be clearly displayed.

This chap was trying it on. Are you sure he was a legit parking attendant?

claire As I have stated i did own up and did full price. I wouldn't call it "acting innocent when as I have also previously stated, there was no sign. Please read before posting.

Yes you owned up but it doesn't sound like you did it obligingly.

It's quite obvious that people shouldn't transfer tickets.

But if you're still annoyed about this then I can see that you will keep being patronising to me too.

I disagree with you - it's AIBU. That's how it works.

I think the tickets are not transferable only if this forms part of the contract for using the car park. So depending on the signing it could well be that the tickets are transferable, regardless if that was how the car park company intended things to work.

I think there is a very good chance the man who charged you £8 was not the car park attendant. However I think having got into a confrontation with him you either had to pay or drive off as if he was dodgy you could easily have come back to a damaged car if not.
