Bit of back story, I woke up yesterday with a bite-like lump on my leg, which was all red and swollen.

Overnight it's doubled in size and has an icky yellow head on it (any volunteers to pop it?) so I went to the docs and she thinks I've had an allergic reaction to a bite. Have been given some antihistamine tablets to take and some antibiotics..... They're HUGE. they're just shy (in length) of a £2 coin. And I'm petrified of taking tablets at the best of times.

So WIBU to save myself the upset and just chop my gammy leg off :(

Get some zinc oxide paste and cover the bite with that and a dressing - it helps draw out the poison (had something similar years ago, the poison was travelling up my leg and I could hardly walk. ZO paste really helped).

Can you smash up the tablets and put them in juice or something??

Squeeze it and then smother it in tcp to dry it out. You'll probably get a scar though.

Can you smash up the tablets and put them in juice or something?? Not without medical advice. This can be dangerous. Please don't do this without asking your doctor or pharmacist.

Yes it releases the medicine too quickly into the bloodstream so dont smush them up.

Or mix them with OJ. Most pills are meant to be taken whole with a glass of water. Unless you are told otherwise, this is the way to take them.

If it's helpful, I find swallowing a pill with a mouthful of porridge the easiest way to take them.

I wouldn't chop your leg off, imagine all the shoes you have that will be wasted.

But won't you need to take tablets for the pain?

Report
scarletforya · 21/05/2013 17:06

Oops! Didn't know that. Sorry for that dopey suggestion!

If they're that big are you sure they are tablets ... and not suppositories?

Better check the information in the pack!

What antibiotics are they?

A lot of tablets can be crushed if necessary, but always get advice from a pharmacist first (I'm one!)

When travelling through S.Africa a while back, a friend of mine developed a v. large boil on the shoulder.

The pharmacist suggested heating a coke bottle and then shoving the top over the offending nastiness.

As the expanded air inside cools and contracts, it will create a vacuum and eventually SUCK out the stuff in a dramatic explosion.

Photos please.
